James Hills Obituary

James E. Hills 10 05 1921 - 11 06 2010 Jim, brother to John and Marjorie Hills, uncle to Nicole, Barry, and Marla; friend of Michael Farrell for 68 years. Jim died of cardiac arrest. His care at Seton Med Ctr in So. SF and the VA Hosp in SF was extraordinary. A native San Franciscan, son of George and Ellen Hills; graduate of St. Anne's; Poly High, 1940; retired from the SPCA as asst supt. Jim's closest friend is Michael Farrell; they were WWII shipmates on the USS Medusa (AR 1) at Pearl Harbor. Michael, a coxswain's mate, was seriously wounded during a motor launch action, and Jim, a Navy medic, took care of him on the Medusa. They lost contact after the war but met again in 1960 and were close friends until Jim's death. They took 20 long ocean cruises together. Michael is going to scatter Jim's ashes at ports of call from Panama to Sydney. In Jim's last days, their initial roles were reversed - Jim was cared for by Michael who took him regularly to the VA Hosp and helped wherever he could. Jim's last years at the Chestnut Creek Senior Apts in So SF were among the happiest days of his life. No services per Jim's request.
