JAMES MCDONALD Obituary

James Michael McDonald 12/05/36 - 06/02/12 Coach Jim McDonald, 75, passed away peacefully in San Francisco on June 2, having endured multiple myeloma and related complications since 2003. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Francesca (Guheen) and daughters Christina D'Arcy (Finbarr) and Melissa Wagner (Nicholas). He is the proud Papa of Oliver Edward James Wagner. Jim is uncle to Jessica Guheen Wald (Adam), Colin (Carrie) and Ryan Guheen, Paula, Kenny and the late Kevin Carolla, John Edmunds and Sandra Ledford. Jim is survived by his brothers-in-law Michael Guheen (Cheryl) and Fred Carolla, and his sister-in-law Susan (Guheen) Desautels (Marc). He is predeceased by his parents, Valentine and Noreen McDonald, twin brother Jerome and sisters Patricia and Peggy; his in-laws, John J. Guheen II and Francis Arguello Guheen (nee Lemmelett) and brother-in-law John J. Guheen III. Jim grew up in Eureka Valley and graduated from Most Holy Redeemer grammar school. He attended St. Joseph's Seminary in Los Altos for one year prior to attending Saint Ignatius College Preparatory on Stanyan Street and graduating in the class of 1955. Jim's collegiate athletic and academic adventures began at the University of San Francisco followed by a stint at Santa Clara University and then back to USF where he completed his B.S. in Business Administration, followed by a teaching credential and Master's degree in Education. In 1962, at Saint Ignatius College Preparatory, Jim began what was to become a 50-year career as an educator and football coach. In 1971, Jim started teaching and coaching at Saint Mary's College of California in Moraga. He retired in 2004, after 32 years of service and in 2005 he was inducted into the St. Mary's College Athletic Hall of Fame, an honor for which he was most humble. After his official retirement, Jim volunteered on the coaching staff of City College of San Francisco and was ecstatic to be a part of Coach Rush's 2011 National Championship team. Coaching at CCSF completed Jim's vision of coaching football until he died. Jim made a positive impact in the lives of hundreds of young men and women and enjoyed the ongoing communication with so many of his former players and students. His spirits were buoyed with visits and phone calls from players and students throughout the years, especially during his illness. He delighted in hearing about their families, careers, and accomplishments. Jim valued family and friends and was extraordinarily loyal to the loved ones in his life. He referred to himself as a blessed man to be surrounded by his loyal family and friends, for they made him laugh and lightened his heart throughout his life. He felt fortunate to visit with them daily and weekly in his last months. Friends may visit Monday June 11th, 5pm with a Vigil Service 7pm, followed by a Funeral Mass Tuesday 10am, all at St. Ignatius Church, 650 Parker Ave. San Francisco. Committal Private. Given Jim's lifelong devotion to teaching and coaching within the Catholic tradition, donation decisions that support education (with or without an emphasis on athletics) of young men and women within the Catholic faith would be fitting in his honor. Jim was particularly grateful to the Jesuits for the impact they had on his formative years and how their philosophy shaped his life; he was grateful for how the individual Jesuits in his life guided and supported him as an adult, especially during his illness. Jim was also affected by, and deeply respected, the teaching mission of the Christian Brothers at Saint Mary's College. Additionally, donations of one's time or funds in support of the vocation of nursing would be an appropriate tribute, as Jim had a deep respect for the nurses who took such good care of him, calling them his angels. The family would like to extend its gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Hematology/Oncology practice at the University of California San Francisco and the UCSF Family Medicine Centerat Lakeshore; and in addition, the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Jewish Home in San Francisco who welcomed Jim and treated him like family. To all our friends who provided support and guidance and were always there for us during this time, our heartfelt thanks and love.

I offer my sincere condolences to the family.

I will always remember Mr. McDonald as the quite, but determined football coach of our undefeated 1963 Junior Varsity football team at St. Ignatius. He was not a loud and aggressive man but his strong and ethical leadership style, made him loved and respected by al of us. He was not only our football coach, but he was our leader and mentor, too. Mr. Mc, as I used to call him, set life-long examples for us young, impressionable Ignatians, on how to be good Catholic gentlemen.... God be with you, Mr. McDonald. And thank you, sir.

Mr. McDonald was my History teacher in my freshman year 1963 at S.I. He was a good and decent man and a fine teacher. One time I smarted off in his class and he held over as the rest of the class was dismissed. He very effectively counseled me about my misbehavior and I never fooled around in his class again. My condolences to Mr. McDonald's family and friends. A.M.D.G.

Some say you can measure life by the imprint a person leaves behind. I'm not sure if I believe that, but I KNOW Jim's influence will be felt for many generations to come. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and all that were touched by him. Rest in Peace Coach.

Coach Mac we shared many wonderful moments on our adventure to the Yosemite Valley. One of the lasting memories of that adventure was our walk up to the top of Yosemite Falls together. It feels just like yesterday that we were standing out on the ledge and looking out over the valley in awe of the beauty that was before us. Thank you for taking the time to spend those moments with me. You are a man of inspiration your words will not be forgotten.

I will never forget his bigger than life persona, as I sat there as a "lowest form of life" Freshman on the first day of his typing class in 1969 (is typing still even taught at S.I. ??? kinda' doubt it) as he gave his long heartfelt speech to us about what the significance of the coming 4 years at S.I. would mean for us . . .

"You guys won't believe me right now, but from today, the next 4 years will be the most special years of your whole life . . you will make friends here that will be the best and the most meaningful friends of your whole life . . in 40 years most of your grade-school friends will be only vague memories . . and the same for a large part of your (drunken) college friends . . but the experiences, the lessons, and the friends you will make here at S.I., will be your most cherished" . . .

He was right, and he had passion that rubbed-off . . . I always liked him . . and I always respected him . . even after he popped me in the shoulder after I had goofed-off a little too much one day in class (got an "A" in Freshman typing) . . . I can still feel the muscles in my shoulder twitching from that pop . . . the pop wasn't hard, but it was deserved . . . R.I.P. Mister

I was a sophmore in typing class. Coach Mac comes up to me and says, "I hear you kick footballs pretty good. You wanna play varsity next year?" I said "Sure". I thought he was joking. He wasn't...changed my life. I will never forget him...he was a great person. SI "73"

During the time that I spent with the family, it was obvious what a loving and devoted father and husband Coach was. He would do anything for his girls. May you find strength in your memories during this difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
God Bless!

Coach Mac, thank you for everything. The coaching and teaching worlds are losing a great mentor but those of us that carry on your teachings can hope to be as influential and respected as you are.

Coach Mac,

I don't remember a lot of plays from college, they've all kind of become a blur. But I remember all the great stories, all the crack up jokes and all the great pre-game words of advice that you gave. You were one of the most influential individuals in my life and a big part of the reason why I went into coaching. The toughness that you inspired in me is a big reason why years after I finished playing football I do Ironman triathlons. When I'm an old fart, I will still think fondly of you. Thanks for the great memories. Pog mo' thoin!

Coach Mac you were one of a kind. Thank you for everything you did for me. Your students and former players were blessed to have had you in their lives, and I for one am deeply honored to have been a small part of it as a player and student at SMC. You are gone, but will NEVER be forgotten. GOD IS A GAEL!
