Jay Lee Chiles

Jay Lee Chiles Nov. 26, 1941 - July 9, 2009 Dr. Jay Lee Chiles, 67, died unexpectedly in Palo Alto, CA, on July 9, 2009. A longtime resident of Portola Valley and Palo Alto, Jay was one of the best known and most respected maxillofacial and oral surgeons in the Peninsula/South Bay region prior to his retirement in 1990. Jay was born and raised in Aberdeen, SD, the second son of Albert B. and Mabel Lee (Pershing) Chiles. He was educated at South Dakota State University (B.S.), the University of Minnesota (D.D.S.) and the Mayo Clinic, where he completed his residency in oral surgery. Together with fellow Mayo Clinic graduate Dr. Thomas Poore, he ran a large and very successful practice with offices in Menlo Park and Redwood City. Jay lived in Wailea, Maui for the last 10 years of his life. He loved the island for its beauty, tranquility and breathtaking sunsets. A long-time lover of classical music, Jay also served for a number of years on the Board of Directors of the Maui Symphony Orchestra. Jay is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Ross Chiles, MD., and Sharie Chiles of Austin, TX; and by his two nieces, Bethany (Chiles) Gonzales, also of Austin, and Lesley (Chiles) Welch of Cedar Park, TX. Jay leaves behind scores of people whose lives he touched and enriched. No one will miss him more than his best friend of 25 years, Louis E. (Louie) Olave Jr. Even before retiring from his practice, he and Louie traveled the world together, journeying to various and sundry locales in Western Europe, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific. When Jay moved to Maui in 1998, Louie made it to the island at least four times per year. Jay spent the holiday season and every July with Louie and his partner, Coit D. (Chip) Blacker in their Palo Alto home. It was in the course of his most recent stay with Louie and Chip that he suddenly passed away. Celebrations of Jay's life will be held in Palo Alto and Wailea. At his request there will be no memorial service. Those who wish to honor and remember Jay are invited to do so by making a donation in his name to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
