Jennie Haydel Obituary

Jennie Haydel Aug, 29, 1980 - Sep. 17, 2010 Jennie had a unique ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Her thoughtfulness, empathy, sense of humor and ever-present smile touched hundreds of people. We all miss her terribly. We are so appreciative of her many devoted friends who have been so generous with their memories during this difficult time. Jennie was born in Berkeley and educated in the Piedmont School system, Colorado College, The New College and Holy Names University. She was working on her master's degree and beginning her student teaching in math at the time of her death. Jennie was motivated by a powerful sense of fairness and justice and she backed up her principles with actions. Her volunteer activities included Streetside Stories, Food Not Bombs, Habitat For Humanity, education for low-income students in Colorado and California and many more, too numerous to mention. She was an artist, a photographer and a seamstress, who expressed her insights into the human condition with skill and humor. She was an athlete, who enjoyed the outdoors. She competed in cross-country and track and field in high school, captained the Oakland Strokes women's crew, completed two triathlons and bicycled across the United States. She was a loyal and supportive friend to many and a beloved daughter, sister and aunt to her family. Jennie leaves behind her mother Leslie Haydel; father Jim Haydel; sisters Farish Haydel, Elizabeth Haydel, and Auban Willats; five nieces and a nephew. A memorial service celebrating Jennie's life will be held on Monday, October 11 at 3:30 at the Brazilian Room in Tilden Park in Berkeley. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jennie's name to Streetside Stories, 3130 20th St., San Francisco 94110, or Bay Area Wilderness Training, 2301 Broadway, Ste. B, Oakland 94612.

I remember her as an aid for my 8th grade support class. she was so sweet. she gave me candy, shared her stories, was a total rocking person. i remember her congratulating me after the 8th grade graduation ceremony, she's always had that signature big smile. i heard the news today and it made me sob. i still have the piece of string wrap from the bag of candy you gave me. i'll always remember how awsome of an aid you were, Jennie. i'll miss you..

Jennie's memory seems to define a certain time in our lives when our kids were young and innocent and we were too. We treasure those days of art classes, quilt making, walking dogs, going to a neighborhood school and peacefully enjoying life. We did not look too far ahead or worry very much. All we needed to appreciate our days was within our grasp. Jennie thank you for your smile and the softness you brought to us all. We somehow knew those days would be fleeting and thankfully our senses soaked up every moment. You and your family are in our hearts and memories forever.

My prayers for eventual peace and gentleness for each of you. I think of the Haydel family and think of only light and beautiful smiles, Jennie carried that legacy.
In sadness with and for you,

I witnessed personally Jennie's generosity, kindness, and empathy when she volunteered at Streetside Stories. We lost Jennie way too soon, and the world lost one of its lights.
