I worked with Joe at Nikon and always enjoyed a chance to stop and chat about both work-related and general discussions about the world around us. We shared a somewhat "snarky" attitude and even today it brings a (now wistful) smile to my face to remember him.

I met Joe in Austin in the 1960's when I was a young teenager and he was best friend to my brother, Tom, at UT. I was lucky enough to eventually call him my brother-in-law. In the 60s he looked kind of like Paul McCartney. In those days my best memories of him are his engaging me in intellegent conversation, showing me his research lab and computer lab that involved punch cards and giant reels of tape! I was there when he and my siblings were on our Grandma's old place in a VW bug where the land owner almost used his shotgun thinking we were theiving tresspassers! Joe would send me birthday cards that said I was a "good egg." But the best thing about Joe was what a wonderful Dad he was to my niece. I will always love and admire Joe for that. I have never seen a better Dad. God bless all who loved him with peace.
Love you Joe! Rest in peace and love.

Liz, you and Amy and family are in my prayers. Love you!

I will always remember you for your wit, your knowledge and the laughter you brought to us when we were all together. I was always proud to say "that's my cousin". I will miss you.

My condolenses to Amy, Liz and all the family and friends that had the wonderful experience of knowing Joe. I don't think I ever heard a negative word coming from his mouth which was always framed with a smile. What will I remember about Joe?... His all embracing and warm hug.

Although I didn't know Joe well, I felt a closeness to him through the relationship that Joe's mother, Adele, shared with my parents, Jeline Allen Pegram (Adele's first cousin) and Milton Pegram. Adele always held a special place in their hearts, and by virtue of my parent's fondness for Adele, I had the pleasure of exchanging several warm, friendly e-mails with Joe. Joe's sincerity, intelligence, and love for Adele were evident from the tone of every communication we had. I regret that I didn't know Joe better. That is my loss.
Rest in peace, my distant cousin.

Loved you for your big heart. And that you could debate with my best friend, Amy. You'll be in my heart forever.
