Kenneth Hurbert Obituary

Kenneth Lee Hurbert April 6, 1930 - October 12, 2010 Ken died in SF, with family around him, after a difficult & courageous battle due to complications from hip surgery. A second generation San Franciscan, he loved & lived in the City most of his life. As a boy, his family name was changed from Hurwitz to Hurbert. He was recently pre-deceased by his brother Stanley. He will be missed by his 4 children: Ken Jr, Ellie (mom to his 4 grandchildren), Charles and Sam, and their mother, his dear friend Iris; cousin Walter Miller; and their families... and friends. He was kind & humble with a ready optimism & sense-of-humor. Ken enjoyed family & friends and his dog Max was a lively companion for walks to the Rose Garden in GG Park. He enjoyed simple pleasures: cooking & eating; bread-baking; dim sum; Japanese art; travel and listening to opera. He ended his day with a well-deserved glass of Scotch. He was a boyscout in SF-Troop 17. He attended Lowell HS and UCB; Army Language School in Monterey (speaking Mandarin). He enjoyed his career in Home Furnishings (SF Merchandise Mart, The Icehouse & The Showplace), his travels as a Rep in the Northwest & Hawaii, and his retail store The Elegant Block, Union Street. His claim to fame was discovering the Swinging Wonder, a gift item featured on the Johnny Carson Show. Changing careers, he was co-proprietor of Shenson's Jewish Deli, Geary Blvd. He said he had a good life and he was never bored. He requested no service, but those who knew him should drink a toast in his honor!

Ken and I met first at the age of five in the Kindergarten of the Madison School, near where both of us lived in the Richmond District of San Francisco. Even at that early age, Ken had a warm, generous personality that I appreciated very much because I came from a recent refugee family from Hitler's Germany, and was in the throes of learning a new language and new customs.

As Kindergarten classmates, Ken and I became fast friends soon after we met. Neither of us was very athletic and we spent our "recess" time walking around the school yard talking and talking.

After six years at Madison we went on to 7th Grade at Roosevelt Junior High School, also in the Richmond District. Here we were assigned to separate "home rooms" and
had less time together. We did have a few classes together including Mr. Fast's English class which we both enjoyed. We both developed an interest in keeping beautiful tropical fish in small, heated aquariums, a hobby that Ken continued to enjoy right up to the last time I visited him, a few months before his death.

Finally, we entered Lowell High School

Oh Ken! I loved knowing you and spoke to you just prior to this sad news. You were an awesome person and friend, and every time I visited SF, I loved visiting you! You will be surely missed...Joey, (Shenson's Deli)...Charlie and Sam....So sorry for your loss. Your Dad always spoke so highly of the two of you and how proud he was of you both.
