Kevin John Maguire
Nine years old, passed peacefully at home with his family by his side in San Francisco, California on August 4, 2013.
Kevin entered this world appropriately on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2004. First born son to Buffy and Patrick Maguire, Kevin filled the world with limitless amounts of love and joy, and he paved the way of love for his younger brothers, Conor and Dylan Maguire. He was constantly surrounded by his family, with whom he shared deep love and comfort. His Grandparents: Kevin and Martine O'Boyle, Cecile Marie and Nick Kuzma, and the late John and Christy Ann Maguire; aunts and uncles: Deirdre (Michael) Nagayama, Patrick (Sonja) O'Boyle, Stephanie O'Boyle, John Joe (Kathleen) Maguire, Mary (Liam Frost) Maguire, Daniel (Tina) Maguire, Christianne (Michael) Crotty, Thomas (Maureen) Maguire, Stephen (Julie) Maguire and Finbar McPolin; and cousins. Kevin is one of 32 cousins, all in San Francisco, all of whom he celebrated life with and loved deeply. In addition to his family, Kevin created an extended family of many, many close friends.
Kevin's formal education was at French American International School in San Francisco (FAIS), where he enjoyed learning French and where he delighted in playing endless games of schoolyard soccer. During his very first teacher conference at FAIS, his teacher described Kevin very accurately: "Kevin is king of the playground."
Kevin loved playing, and playing was a perfect way to showcase his unique and beautiful spirit. Many know Kevin's prowess on the soccer field, where you could witness his strength, determination and tenacity. Number 7 was always quickly identified as a force to reckon with. Despite Kevin's ferocity on the field, Kevin had a gentle, kind spirit that shined through his sparkling eyes. His smile was contagious. All those who spent time with Kevin will remember laughing with him. He was generous and humble on the sidelines.
These strengths served Kevin well as he faced the end of his life with bravery and grace. Kevin proved himself over and over as an example to us all.
Although Kevin's time here was far too short, his impact was immense, and will be felt by the FAIS, St. Gabriel's and soccer communities across the City. In his short life, Kevin made enduring bonds with family and friends with whom his memory lives on.
Visitation for family and friends will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, August 8th at St. Gabriel Church, 2559 40th Ave., San Francisco, CA. with the Rosary to begin at 7:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 9th also at St. Gabriel Church, followed by the Committal at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 1500 Old Mission Road, Colma.
We would love to create a new San Francisco soccer field in Kevin's name. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Kevin Maguire Field fund can be made out to Evolution FC, Tax ID 32-0295019 and mailed to Kevin Maguire Field, 3620 Wawona Street, San Francisco, CA 94116.
