Martha Friedenberg Obituary

Martha Merle Friedenberg Passed away peacefully at home in San Francisco on September 11th, 2010. She was adored by her children, Jay Friedenberg, Merle Friedenberg, Gretchen Berggruen and Mary Ann Garcia. She was a devoted mother-in-law to Donna Friedenberg and John Berggruen and loving Grandmother to Meredith Levy, Jennifer Weiss, Alexander Berggruen, Melanie Weber and Michael Friedenberg as well as to 7 great-grandchildren. Born Martha Feely in Worcester, Massachusetts on April 11th, 1914 she is pre-deceased by her loving husband of 60 years, Milton Hill Friedenberg and by her beloved sister Loretta Rocheleau. Raised and educated in Boston, Martha worked as a secretary for the US Army, and in the Massachusetts State House. She was dearly loved by her many friends and will be greatly missed. A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday September 21st at Notre Dame des Victoires, 566 Bush St, San Francisco, at 2:30pm. In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to UCSF Foundation 220 Montgomery St. S.F. CA. 94104 benefitting either The Memory and Aging Center or The Young Adult and Family Center at Langley Porter.

Martha was a Halloran cousin who lived only a few blocks from me in SF, yet I did not learn about her until shortly before moving to the Midwest. We'd spoken by phone a few times and lately I'd been trying to locate her because a piece of mail was returned to me. How sad to hear she's gone on before us. Would love to correspond with other relatives/cousins. We descend from George Florence Turner Halloran, son of Denis Florence O'Halloran, son of James and Catherine O'Halloran of Mullagh, Clare, IRE. We've become friends also with Winston Grady of Mass. and now New Hampshire, grandson of Denis's sisters Mary and Agnes. Martha's smile made the world a better place. Whenever I would see Martha, her smile would remind me to adjust my attitude.She will be missed.

Dear Merle - Howard W. told me of Martha's passing. It was always such a delight to see her (and you) in the elevator of your building. She had a long and good life, and we were richer by far because we knew her.
