Mary Kunz Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Hurley Kunz 5/15/1932 -12/3/2010 Mary Elizabeth Hurley Kunz, beloved wife, sister, mother and grandmother, went to her eternal reward on Friday, December 3, 2010, after a lengthy illness. She will be greatly missed for her care of her large family, her concern for others, and her sparkling sense of humor. A proud third generation Californian, Mary was born in Watsonville to David Edward and Elizabeth Mary Hurley, and lived in Salinas and Calaveras County. Accepted into college at age 15, Mary graduated from Calaveras High School at 16. In 1954, Mary graduated from Saint Mary's School of Nursing and earned a B.S. in Nursing and PHN from the University of San Francisco. At St. Mary's and as a "Pre-Pioneer" (a member of the second graduating class of women) at USF, Mary developed lifelong friendships with classmates and cousins, and a love of San Francisco. In April of 1954, Mary married William (Bill) David Kunz and lived briefly in Sacramento. Mary and Bill then moved to Fresno, where they reared eight children and were active in St. Helen's Parish. Mary worked as a corporate officer in the construction company Bill established in the Central Valley, and held a contractor's license, but her first love was nursing and she maintained her nurse's license into her 70's. In 1990, Bill and Mary relocated to Concord, where they volunteered at St. Agnes Parish. Recently, she lived on the peninsula where her husband and children, especially her eldest daughter Marianne, and her eldest son William and his wife Arlene, lovingly care for her. She died in Burlingame. Mary's greatest love and source of pride was her family. "Nana" was happiest hosting family holidays, and feeding children and grandchildren. Mary's legacy includes an incomparable example of faith, hard work and dedication. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, William D. Kunz; her brother, Edward Hurley of Stockton; her children and their families: Marianne, Kathleen (Christopher Wille), William (Arlene), Michael (Margie), David (Debbie), Maureen Motoyasu (Jeffrey), and Elizabeth (John Mon Pere). She was preceded in death by her son John. She is survived by 17 grandchildren and numerous cousins and their families. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, December 11 at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church, 1721 Hillside Drive, Burlingame. A rosary will be held prior to the mass at 9:40 am at the church. The family thanks Dr. Geschwind of UCSF, Drs. Levinson and Whelan, and her caregivers, Gloria, Latu, Delia and Mills Estate Villa for their care of Mary during her illness.

Nana was a great mom. She was famous for her intellect, class, quick wit, kindness and lasagna. If duty called she would rush to help a friend, neighbor or family member without hesitation. She knew her history and used it to nurture my generation's cohesiveness and dedication to future generations. Nana, I hope you have time to gallop with Lucky and play the saxophone now.

I am so sorry to hear that Mary has passed. I have such fond memories of Mom, Rosina and Mary sitting around the kitchen table telling stories and laughing. They would relive the days at St. Mary's like it was yesterday. She was so loved and is so missed. My heart is with Bill and the family.
