To Meliza's family. I was deeply saddened to see Meliza's name printed in the "In Memoriam" section of Genesis magazine. I remember Meliza so fondly from high school. She was one of my first friends there, and as time passed we grew apart, but I remember her so well. You may remember me as the other girl from Potrero Hill that bussed with her, and even my dad gave her a ride a few times. What I remember are her eyes, so bright with life and vitality, and a wisdom far beyond her years. She always seemed older (in a good way), brighter, smarter, more independent; and I remember her laugh. I am truly and deeply sorry for your loss.

Surprise Party - Las Vegas - December 2007

To Meliza, friendships were between 2 spirits, heart to heart, with no issues of age, distance or frequency of time together. Meliza, with friend Sandy Porter and Sandy's cousin from Ireland, made the trip to Las Vegas for my "Big SIX O" surprise party in December of 2007. This picture caught her between "blinks" of her eyes but her smile shines through. This visit was 2 years into her treatment and she carefully chose how she spent her precious time. I was so surprised and so honored that she made that trip. For that and for all the other precious memories of dinners in San Francisco and countless emails and text messages, I am proud to call her my friend, always. Now that I have met her family at the beautiful services in San Francisco, there is no doubt to me where that wonderful spirit came from. You are an amazing family and she loved you all so much. I know you will hold on to each other tightly through this terrible loss. I will keep in touch with Mr. and Mrs. Orantes and I will miss our beautiful Meliza. Rest in peace, my friend.

Dear Mr and Mrs Orantes, I am so sorry that I am not able to be there to give you my condolences in person. I will try calling when things are less hectic at your house to express my sympathies in person. Until then, I know you know how much I loved her and the huge gulf her loss leaves in my heart. You brought a truly beautiful person into this world and her light shone on so many. She will never truly be gone, while we all remember her so dearly. It doesn't change the fact that we will all miss her brilliant smile and infectious giggle. You and the rest of the family are in our prayers, as you go through this difficult time. Love, Anne and the family

Dear Orantes Family,
Our warmest thoughts are with you now. Meliza was and will remain a wonderful friend. We fondly remember our times with her, traveling, sharing, and laughing. She was good at laughing, really good, and she lifted any room with her presence. We'll miss her, but our strength is focused on you today.

Fernando and Irma - I will always remember Meliza because of the dignity, intelligence and courage with which she confronted this disease. I am so glad to have been part of her circle of friends. I was in awe of her enthusiasm for learning and her ability to create and maintain friendships literally around the world.

Dear Orantes Family-I have such fond memories of Meliza as a youngster. She was so funny, smart, sweet and caring. Her smile would light up the classroom! She had that great way of phrasing things that made everything sound better!
Know that the thoughts and prayers of those who know/knew her are with you all. Mr. D

Dear Orantes Family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. I will always remember Meliza as a sweet little girl at NDV playing in the school yard with her many friends.
