Mildred Dill'Ard Obituary
Mildred Dill'Ard

Mildred Dill'Ard (née Dillard) was born in Georgia on February 28, 1920 and died in Napa on 10 August. A native Southerner, Miss Mildred, as she was known affectionately by her friends and loved ones, was raised for a time in Connecticut before returning to her native Georgia. Her life spanned most of the 20th century and reached beyond to the century past in her childhood memories of growing up in the company of a neighbor who had survived slavery in the South. Miss Mildred's professional life included modeling, and work in the health and beauty industries. She moved to California in the 1950s and made her home in Berkeley. In her retirement years she was a beloved candy striper at Alta Bates Hospital and then, for more than 10 years, the receptionist at the Lasallian Educational Opportunities Center in Oakland. There she was instrumental in teaching children to be ever courteous with their elders and came to be loved and respected by the students, their parents, the staff and the many volunteers. The De La Salle Brothers, who operated the LEO Center, bestowed upon her the honor of Affiliated Membership, which gave her the spiritual benefits of being one of their own as well as a home in the declining months of her life, when she was no longer able to care for herself. A lifetime devoted Roman Catholic, she will be remembered by her fellow parishioners at Saint Joseph the Worker Parish in Berkeley and by many who had attended the Sunday liturgies at old Saint Francis de Sales Cathedral in Oakland. She is survived by her many friends from her parish, Alta Bates Hospital, the LEO Center, her home at Oregon Park in Berkeley, and her De La Salle Brothers. Miss Mildred died peacefully, in the care of the Brothers and staff at the Holy Family Community of Mont La Salle in Napa.

Services will be held at Mont La Salle, Napa, CA (4405 Redwood Road) on Friday, August 16 at 10:00 a.m. Viewing will precede the funeral mass at 9:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Brothers' cemetery. Lunch will be served following the burial. Condolences may be left at
