Mina Mihalovich Obituary

Mina Mihalovich 81, passed away on Saturday, September 19th in San Francisco, CA. She is survived by her brother, Harry Moss of London; children Karen Mihalovich of Cotati, Dan Mihalovich and Judy Stern and grandchildren Nate and Cayla of Tiburon. Mina was born in Istanbul and emigrated to Palestine in 1941. She served in the Israeli Army in 1948 and emigrated to the U.S. to attend UC Berkeley. She married in 1950. After raising two children, Mina's thirst for education led her back to college to complete her Bachelor's and Masters of Arts, both at San Francisco State University ('73 and '76). She devoted herself to a wonderful career, teaching French, Hebrew and ESL in San Francisco high schools and Community colleges. She loved teaching and was loved by her students and fellow faculty members. Mina was a true intellectual, a wonderful conversationalist and thrilled to travel around the world. Her children and grandchildren were her passion. She loved us like no other, she showered us with love and advice...and too many gifts. She taught us humility, patience and chutzpah. She was tough, heroic through her myriad of illnesses and could handle the best of you at bridge. But she could not negotiate with her own physiological demise. We gratefully thank her doctors from CPMC, UCSF and Stanford for keeping her alive for so many years for us to enjoy the absolute pleasure of her company. She feared not being remembered; if you knew Mina, you will never forget her. We miss her so, already. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 26, 2010, in the Chapel at Temple Emanu-El, 2 Lake Street, San Francisco, CA 94118. (415) 751-2535.

What a beautiful woman! I wish I had a picture that did her justice, but I'll add the ones I have. I remember a gathering in her lovely home, but the only pictures I have are of her in my home at my 40th birthday party in 1985, and at a retirement party in 2007. I wish that I'd known about Mina's death in time to attend the memorial service. She will be remembered.

With Mina's smile, her spark, her humor...how could we forget? Here's to a wonderful lady.

I knew Mina through CLIR. Had many wonderful bridge games with her and enjoyed her cooking and hospitality. She was a delightful friend.
