Obituary Condolences

Neil W. Ross

Neil W. Ross passed away on February 17, 2014 at age 73. Born in Oakland on May 8, 1940, Neil lived downtown with his parents and while they were away at work, he learned about life playing outside with his friends in the neighborhood. He loved being part of the diverse student mix at Westlake Middle School, and at UC Berkeley he made lifelong friends while completing his studies in the School of Criminology.

Neil's extraordinary intelligence was no match for his heart. His impulse was always to help people, and he knew how. In his work under Dr. Joel Fort at San Francisco Department of Health's Center for Special Problems, Neil treated people from all walks of life for drug addiction and other maladies. Neil had a broad understanding of societal problems like violence and addiction, and treated individuals and groups in his long career as a therapist. His selflessness and generosity of spirit touched countless patients and friends.

He seemed to have things well figured out, but never let on, remaining genuinely curious and ardent in work and play. With Neil one expected laughter, good food and music, and a brush with the purest joy there is. Most recently he was Assistant Professor of Forensic Psychology at Argosy University.
