Norman Edgar Merkel
Norman, 87, passed away June 29 in Millbrae.
Norm was born in Ottawa, Canada and immigrated with his parents and brother to the U.S. in the late 1920's. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed in Fallon, Nev. where he was trained as an air traffic controller.
Shortly after the war ended, he started his career as an air traffic controller at S.F. International Airport. Eventually he became chief of the tower. He retired from the Federal Aviation Administration after approximately 36 years. He was very active in the Burlingame/Millbrae communities and served as a conservator for San Mateo County.
He was predeceased by a son, Gary Norman Merkel and is survived by son Norman Gary Merkel and daughter Michele J. Merkel.
Services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, July 19 at Mount Tamalpias Cemetery in San Rafael.
