Philip Cheung Obituary

Philip Wing Hong Cheung, M.D. Passed away peacefully on September 21, 2010 after a courageous battle with leukemia. He was 73 years old. Born in Toishan County, China, Philip was the oldest son of the late Lin Heun Yip and the late Cheung On. He led a distinguished life in medicine. After graduating from Lingnan Middle School, Macau, he attended Hunan Medical College, graduating in 1958. In 1960, he married his medical school classmate, Amelia Wong. After medical school, Philip and Amelia worked at Project Concern International, a floating clinic that offered basic medical services to impoverished residents in Hong Kong. In 1967, they immigrated to the United States, where Philip focused on gaining US medical accreditation. He completed duties as a Rotating Intern at the Presbyterian-University of Pennsylvania Medical Center (1968) in Philadelphia and subsequently completed his radiology residency at the Monmouth Medical Center (1974) in Long Branch, New Jersey. He also proudly served as a major in the US Army. After a brief stint in the Midwest, they settled in San Francisco in 1981. Philip opened a private medical practice in Chinatown that he operated for over 20 years. His practice carried on his focus of providing affordable medical care. As a long time resident of San Francisco, Philip was a proud member of the Olympic Club where he enjoyed exercising, playing golf, and dining. Philip is survived by his wife of 50 years, Amelia; son, Stephen (Angela); grandson, James; three brothers; two sisters; and eight nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service Celebrating his Life will be held on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 1:00pm at the Cypress Lawn Funeral Home in the Tiffany Chapel, located at 1370 El Camino Real, Colma, California. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his loving memory to Project Concern International, 5151 Murphy Canyon Road, Suite 320, San Diego, CA 92123 preferred.
