Richard Kollin Obituary

Richard Philip Kollin Oakland resident, loving husband and father of two died early Sunday morning November 7, 2010 at the age of 74. Born in New York City December 20, 1935. Son of adoring Hungarian born parents Willam Kollin and Claire Zwillinger. At the age of 4 he performed traditional Hungarian dances at the 1939 World's Fair. Raised in Brooklyn and Miami. Attended University of Florida Gainesville, where he learned to speak Russian. Served in the US army Counter Intelligence Corp. Received masters degree, Columbia University. He was a pioneer in library and information sciences by publishing scientific, business, newspaper and law index databases. He parlayed his publishing, library and information science knowledge into roles as an electronic publisher, major player in the information technology revolution and early Internet entrepreneur. Founder of several innovative companies such as Pandex, Oliver Press, Magazine Index, IAC, Telebase, and Music Boulevard. A free thinker and proud political progressive. Esperantist. Lover of Mozart. His long battle with diabetes in later years put a damper on his growing list of accomplishments but not this sweet mans dynamic personality. When unable to speak, his eyes spoke volumes. When unable to walk, his pointing finger lead the way for people to follow. Richard Kollin, lovingly known by family and friends as Dick is survived by his devoted wife Sandy Buehler, loving children, son Todd Kollin and daughter Lisa Kollin, favorite sister Barbara Sparrow and many, many extended family members and friends. The family will hold a private memorial over his birthday weekend. For more information contact the family at [email protected]
