Former resident of Orinda
On March 5, 2014, 95-year-old Robert Ryland Bowles (Bob) died peacefully at his home in Rossmoor. Bob was born in Denver in January 1919 to Robert and Beulah Bowles. After graduating from East High School in 1937, he attended Caltech in Pasadena, receiving a BS in Chemical Engineering in 1941 and a Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering in 1942. He then began a 42-year career with Chevron in its downstream (manufacturing) arm with positions at the El Segundo Refinery, the Richmond Refinery and San Francisco. He retired in 1984 from his role of General Manager of Operations and Business Planning for Chevron USA.
Bob lived in Orinda for 61 years, moving to Rossmoor in July of 2013. In years past he enjoyed golf, travel, bridge, and poker with his penny ante Chevron group. More recently, computer solitaire was his game of passion. He was a faithful 49er and Giants fan. Bob was a consummate do-it-yourselfer and never met a hardware store he didn't like.
Bob is survived by his wife Betty, his son Rob of Mt. Shasta and son and daughter -in- law Rick and Kathy of Lafayette, his grandchildren Brad and wife Tracy, Kristy and husband Mike, JP, Randy and wife Dagmara, Lindsay, Kaitlyn, Scott and wife Michelle and seven great grand-children. He was predeceased by his parents, his son Steve, and his brother Richard.
His family extends a special thank -you to his caregiver, Silvina Moore, whose loving and competent care made his life comfortable for the past six years.
A private family service will be held in the near future.
