Walter Mahoney

Walter F. Mahoney 1926-2011 Costumer and Actor, Walter F. Mahoney died on January 12, 2011 of complications due to cancer. During the 50's, 60's and 70's he was a well-known local actor with The Bay Theater, The Actor's Workshop and The Interplayers, performing such roles as Othello, Richard II and Claudius in Shakespeare as well as Kaufman and Hart and other contemporary plays. He is especially remembered for his "George" in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. He was employed by the San Francisco Opera as resident designer and head of the men's department. In 1995 he received the Opera Medal for his contribution to the quality of the San Francisco Opera, given during the second act of his production of "La Boheme" by General Director Lotfi Mansouri. He retired after 60 years of working with the Opera He is survived by many friends and colleagues in the international opera world and at home by his partner of 49 years, William E Wilson and his brother, Robert F. Mahoney of Fairfax, CA. Contributions in his memory may be sent to Project Open Hand.
