William Nichols Obituary
William Daniel Nichols

Passed away peacefully in his San Rafael home on Sunday, December 15, 2013. Bill was born January 16, 1933 in Erwin, Tennessee to Florence Booth and James Nichols. The family moved to Johnson City, TN in 1938. He graduated from Science High School in 1950 and entered the US Air Force. The Air Force trained Bill as a Management Analyst. He was assigned to the Headquarters of the 9th Air Force in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  In 1952, Bill was sent to Florence, Italy with NATO, where he met his wife, Clara Ascani. He married Clara in 1954 after enjoying a wonderful courtship including riding Vespas throughout the Tuscan countryside. He was dearly loved by his Italian family in Florence and Rome.

In 1960, Bill entered civilian life and enjoyed a 20-year career as a sales manager with Stenocord Corporation in Los Angeles and Lanier Business Products in San Francisco. He was awarded national sales manager of the year for several years. Bill became a real estate broker in 1982 in San Francisco, working for Davis Realty and later opening his own office in the Financial District leasing commercial real estate.

Bill was always engaged in current affairs and cared deeply about his country and those less fortunate. He valued education, read continuously and spent several years volunteering at San Quentin prison teaching literacy. He was first and foremost a family man who enjoyed fishing with his children, listening to jazz music, playing tennis with his wife and friends, and staying connected via Skype to his entire family. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Clara G. Nichols, his daughter, Linda Kapnick (David), his sons, Daniel (Aimee) and Will Nichols, two grandchildren, Carolyn Hunter (Robert) and Daniel Kapnick (Natalie), and two great-grandchildren, Maxavier and Scotland Hunter, his brother, Donald Nichols(Irene), his sister, Ava June Johnson and many nieces, nephews, grandnephews and grandnieces. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Jack Nichols. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be given to Disabled American Veterans at DAV.org or UCSF Foundation Medical Center Fund at http://makeagift.ucsf.edu. The family wishes to thank the dedicated doctors, nurses and staff of UCSF that helped Dad remain with us for so many years to enjoy the blessings of recent family weddings, baptism and holidays. A memorial service and mass will be held on January 11, 2014 at St. Isabella's Church in San Rafael, CA at 11:00 am.
