Herbert Joseph Callman
Passed away peacefully at his home in San Francisco on April 14, 2014 at age 90. Beloved husband of Diane Callman for 57 years; loving father of Rosalie (Henry) Friedman, Joshua Callman (Ineko Tsuchida) and Elissa Callman; adoring grandfather of Max Friedman and Ariel and Adam Callman; dear brother of Shira Levy; caring uncle, cousin and friend.
Herbert was born in Brooklyn, New York to Arthur and Jeane Callman and an extended large and loving family. He started working in the family printing business at a young age and this hard work ethic characterized his entire life. Herbert served in the Pacific in WWII. While visiting family in the Bay Area, he decided to enroll at UC Berkeley where he received his Bachelor's degree. He subsequently earned a law degree while working full time as a court clerk. Herbert married Diane in 1956 and they raised three children in the Sunset district of SF.
Herbert loved fishing, gardening, cooking, opera, singing, traveling and hosting family vacations and celebrations. He had a strong interest in current events and what was going on in the community and world at large. Herbert appreciated nature, in particular when he could surround himself with animals in their natural habitat. He was especially fond of dogs and Minnie, Pip and Wiley were a great comfort to him during his recent illness. Thanks to Tender Rose Home Care for their compassionate and excellent care. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, April 20, 2014, at 2:30 PM at Eternal Home Cemetery Chapel, 1051 El Camino Real, Colma, followed by interment. In lieu of flowers, donations to Jewish National Fund, North American Conference on Ethiopian Jewry, or a
