Mary Jo Schmidt Obituary
Mary Josephine Schmidt

July 12, 1925 - June 16, 2014

Mary Jo passed away June 16, 2014 after a long struggle with Lewy Body dementia with her loving daughter Tina at her side. Born to John and Mary Watson, she grew up "the middle child" in Lake Charles, Louisiana. She arrived in San Francisco in 1947 and began a lifelong love affair with her new home. She was always a beautiful truly elegant Southern lady. An insatiable reader and innately curious, Mary Jo was known to never back down from a challenge or passionate political discourse. Family and friends were often treated to delicious home cooked meals. After a lifetime of office work, in her later years she enrolled in docent training and was proud to graduate and lead many on tours at the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco, where she made life-long friends. Through all the challenges life presented to her, nothing made her happier than being surrounded by her grandchildren, whom she adored. She leaves behind daughter Christina (Tina) Pandolfi McGovern, son in law Ed McGovern, grandchildren, Katie, Claire, Meagan, Jack McGovern, son Ed Doran and granddaughter Sara Doran. Special gratitude to the compassionate caregivers at Agesong Laguna Grove and Hospice by the Bay as well as her best friend Rosaleen Kelly, cousin LaVerne Vitale and numerous others who brought a smile to her face during her years in assisted living. Mary Jo was a long-time and faithful parishioner at St. Brendan Church in San Francisco.
A Prayer Service and Celebration of her Life will take place on Thursday, June 19th, 2014 at 6:00pm at Duggan's Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Avenue, Daly City. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Jack McGovern Coats Disease Foundation, 20 Park Road, Suite #E, Burlingame, CA 94010 or to a preferred.
