Margaret A. Ghirardo Obituary
Margaret A. Ghirardo

October 3, 1922 - August 14, 2014

Margaret Ann Ghirardo née Madden was born in Stockton and raised in Lodi, California, a descendent of California Gold Rush era pioneers. She attended college and worked at Pollock Shipyard until she married Joseph B. Ghirardo in September 1943. Because Joseph worked for Del Monte Foods, the family transferred to Verona, Italy, and Brussels, Belgium, for eight years. A voracious reader who also enjoyed playing bridge, Margaret volunteered at city libraries and local hospitals wherever she lived, including the Garnet Guild at John Muir Hospital. She received the Contra Costa County Special Recognition Award for her Library Volunteer work in May 2001; she rarely missed a day in more than twenty years of service. The Republican Club at Rossmoor also recognized her volunteer efforts and partcipation in the Club with an award in 2003. Margaret was predeceased by Joseph; by her brother, Donald; and by her grandson, Christopher Joseph. She is survived by three daughters, Jo Ann Bank, Diane Ghirardo, and Suzanne Balke; four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. At Margaret's request, private services will be held later. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to Hospice.
