GRAEME SMITH - AVIATION / AEROSPACE HISTORIAN - AUSTRALIA

MY understanding as an Aviation / Aerospace Historian is that as a result of the efforts of Robert "Bud" Marquis' the evening of the crash of EA-401in the Everglades, that 20-30 or lives were saved as a result of his direct action. That action being taken in a swamp with aprox' 3ft of water covering the area with a muddy base and covered in sawgrass ..... littered with very sharp bits of aircraft debris and seriously injured and many dying survivors scattered amongst those debris from the wrecked Eastern Tristar L1011. Bud only had the minimal lighting he had with him ........ No moon, Jet Fuel everywhere, nearly made the situation unworkable ...... until the main rescue units and choppers could get to the crash site. The incredible presence of mind of the surviving Air Hostess to save lives that dark night was also incredible.
Indeed - In honoring the bravest of men, "Bud" a hero of the Rescue of those who survived the Crash Of FLT-EA-401 in putting their Lives first.

The case of EAL 401 was the very FIRST accident I watched on Air Crash Investigation (ACI). Every time I read about EAL 401, you are always mentioned due to your heroic actions in assisting survivors in getting out of the swampy Everglades. 52 years have now passed since that night when EAL 401 went down. May God bless you and your family and may all future investigators (including myself) or aviation accident experts continue to praise you for your unselfish act of heroism that night.
In eternal gratitude

I just watched the TV show 'Air Disasters'. I was just thinking of all the people that are going to remember that their family trees were able to continue grow because of the actions that Robert Marquis took faithful night. All the children and their children will never forget what he did. The man was a hero, risking his life to save as many as he could with the risk of death with all the fuel in the swamp water..

I worked with Bud when I was a dispatcher at the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission on Dixie Highway. Bud's smile was contagious and he was unfailingly kind to everyone. He was one of the good guys who was dedicated to his family and his job and who was willing to help anyone who needed him. My sympathy to his family. He will be missed.

Bud Marquis lived by the airboater's code of ethics - which, in part, says "I will always render assistance to anyone in distress." The FLorida Airboat Association was proud to award him our first "hero's" award last December 29th.
Bud was selfless in his heroic act and thought only of others rather than himself.
It was an honor to meet him and his wife, Nancy and their family last year.
He was a brave but humble man.
Our hearts ache for Nancy and his family and all those whose lives he touched.

I had the pleasure of working with Officer Bud Marquis when employed with the Florida Game & Fresh Water Fish Commission. He truly loved what he did and his enthusiasm for the outdoors inspired many of us who called him "Friend". My heartfelt sympathy to Nancy, Donald & Terri - we all share in your loss.
