Leo Trepp Obituary

Rabbi Leo Trepp 1913 - 2010 Leo Trepp was the last living rabbi to have survived the Holocaust. After being liberated from the concentration camp, Trepp immigrated to California, where he became a professor for humanities and philosophy. Trepp was highly respected for furthering the Jewish-Christian dialogue in Germany. He was dedicated to teaching and spreading his main message: You do not bear guilt for what your grandparents did, but you need to take responsibility. Germany must become the leading country in the fight against anti-Semitism, racism and any discrimination." He wrote several books about Judaism that became standard works in this field. Until this year, he had lectured at the University of Mainz, where he had become an honorary senator. Rabbi Trepp received a substantial number of honors, both in Germany and in the United States. Beloved husband of Gunda Trepp and the late Miriam Trepp; loving father of his daughter Susan and her husband Mark Lachtman; cherished grandfather of David and Helen Greenberg, Amy and Eli Goldman and David and Heather Lachtman; proud great grandfather of Nathan Greenberg and Hailey Goldman; beloved brother of Gustav Trepp and brother in law of Claus, Jochen and Hergen Woebken. Rabbi Trepp was a beloved friend and an inspiring teacher of so many. Services will be held on Tuesday, September 7th at 11:00am in the Martin Meyer Sanctuary at Congregation Emanu-El, 2 Lake St. at Arguello Blvd. in San Francisco. Interment to follow at 2:30pm in the Beth Ami Gardens at Santa Rosa Memorial Park, 1900 Franklin Ave. in Santa Rosa.

I had Dr Trepp as a teacher at Napa College as well as his wife as my second grade teacher. I would like all to know they have left a positive touch on my life. I am now a teacher, they have been a big part of me being successful. Bless you both.

Dear family of Rabbi Trepp:

Rabbi Trepp was instrumental in renewing my enthusiasm for learning during the classes I took from him at Napa College in 1971 and 1972 which propelled me to continue my college education. I remember him fondly and have over the years (and as recently as last month) shared my personal experience with others and how he inspired me to keep learning. Blessings to your family.

I feel truly blessed and honored to have known Rabbi Trepp. He shared some wonderful stories and jokes (usually involving a Rabbi) with me, as long as I matched him with a story or joke. On rare occasion one is gifted with the chance to know an individual of Rabbi Trepp's caliber. My condolences to his family.
Sincerely, Mary Margaret Wetzler

Dear Trepp family,
Rabbi Trepp's ability to tell a story through sense of humor and 'pause' rivetted me in his Cultures of the Western World class at Napa College in 1972. In 2010 I was in line for his signature at CBS in Napa. His signature holds a treasured place in my Bible.
With respect and adoration,

Dear Susan and family,
Rabbie Trepp officiated our marriage in 1978, in Napa.....We met at his lovely home in Napa a couple of weeks before our wedding, when he wanted to make certain that both Ralph and I were Jewish! We had a lovely wedding ceremony in Napa and Rabbi Trepp made it a very memorable event for us and all our guest. What a wise and interesting man he was, may his soul rest in peace. Celebrate his life!
Love,

Dear Susan
You probably don't remember me, but I remember you and your family so well. I took your father's Western Civilization class at Napa JC -- I remember well his humor, but also his insightful comments. He made me think which is what the best teachers do. I also was able to see him at Congregation Beth Shalom this year -- he hadn't changed much! All my love and sympathies to you and your family.

Dr. Trepp taught me World Civilization at
Napa Junior College in the early 1950's.
My fondest memories of his class are
musical. He introduced me to Mozart.
While I went on to teach history I recall, primarily, his love of Mozart.
Thank you for that Dr. Trepp.
