Daniel Ryan Obituary
Daniel Stephen Ryan Age 76, of San Francisco, CA. passed away suddenly in his home on Saturday, February 19, 2011, of heart complications. He had survived leukemia for eight years. Dan was born October 20, 1934 in Merced, Ca. to Stephen and Orlina Ryan and was loving brother to Patricia Ryan Holman. Survived by the love of his life; wife of 52 years, Sally Ann Hough Ryan, Dan met and courted Sally while they both played in the trumpet section at San Francisco State University, where he earned his masters degree in Administrative Education. Dan began his 37 year career with San Francisco Unified School District as an elementary music teacher, moved to junior high band teacher at Pelton Jr. High, and then became a music supervisor, Arts Administrator and the Founding Principal of School of the Arts. Known as SOTA Pop to his students, Dan provided a legacy to the public school system with his dynamic and passionate vision to create and maintain innovative and solid music and arts education programs for all children. To the day of his death, Dan was supporting and fighting for the arts. The evening before his death, he had written a paper titled, "Sound an Alarm for the Arts." He was a board member of San Francisco Organizing Project (SFOP) and supported all districts in S.F. He worked very hard for seven years to see that Dianne Feinstein Elementary School was built and then worked there as a volunteer. He was currently the President of Grace Lutheran Church in the Sunset. Dan is survived by his five children; Keith Ryan, Sandra Ryan Martin, Pamela Ryan, Brenda Ryan Moore, and Markus Ryan, his sons-in law; Greg Martin and Martin Moore, his eight grandchildren, who all knew him as "Bapa."; Mathew, Melanie, Timothy, Ryan, Christopher, Tyler, Shannon, and Justin and great-granddaughter, Katelyn. Dan will be missed by his many friends and family who are welcome to attend a celebration of his life at a Memorial Service to be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 3201 Ulloa Street, San Francisco, CA. 94116 on Saturday, February 26 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church in Dan's name. For more about Dan's life, please refer to www.duggans-serra.com.
