Bernice Becker Obituary
Bernice Becker Was born on 8/13/21 in Brooklyn New York. She died of pneumonia on 5/10/11 surrounded by family and friends after a long struggle with declining health. She was predeceased by son Marty and is survived by daughters Joanie and Bobbie, grandchildren Julia and Gabe, her sister Adele and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Despite her regret that she could not afford to attend college she was self educated in health issues, history, current events and politics. While raising her 3 children in Brooklyn, she fought for schools, safe streets, tenants rights and racial equality in her community. Upon moving to San Francisco in 1976, she worked for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. As co-founder of San Francisco PFLAG, she encouraged parents of gays to understand and accept their gay children. On a personal level she was a fierce proponent of peoples' rights and fought injustice wherever she saw it. She believed that "there is no such thing as impossible if struggles occur on the people level." It can truly be said that no one who met Bernice will ever forget her. Rest at last. Memorial to be held in August. For details, send your contact information to: bernicememorial@hotmail.com
