Photo Patricia Alexander Milliken 1917 - 2012 Longtime San Anselmo resident Patricia Alexander Milliken, died in a Greenbrae retirement home on January 11, 2012. She was 94. Known for her good humor and joie de vivre, Mrs. Milliken traveled the world with her husband. She liked to drive and was a great trip planner, investigating out-of-the-way destinations and creating wonderful itineraries for friends and family. Before settling down as a wife and mother to her two daughters, as a student at UC Berkeley she served as president of both the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and Panhellenic, the governing body for all sorority chapters on campus. She sat on the Women's Executive Board, which governed an association of undergraduate women in her day, and was a member of the Prytanean Women's Honor Society, the oldest collegiate women's honorary society in the country, founded on the Berkeley campus in 1900. Later in life, she sat on the board of the California Alumni Association for two years. She was born in San Francisco in 1917, to Edgar and Gertrude Thayer Alexander. Her father, born in Haiku, Maui, and descended from a missionary family in Hawaii, was a doctor with a practice in San Francisco. Her mother, from San Rafael, had ties to California's lumber-shipping industry. During young Patricia's growing-up years, three generations of her family lived on the same street in San Rafael. Later, all three families moved to homes in Palo Alto. She attended Castilleja School and graduated from Palo Alto High School. She went on to UC Berkeley, earning a degree in history in 1938. Mrs. Milliken maintained lifelong friendships with several sorority sisters. In 1947 she married businessman William Jennings Milliken. Mrs. Milliken is survived by her daughters Mary, of Woodacre; and Nancy, of New Mexico; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a stepsister, Elizabeth Pease of San Rafael. Her older brother, Gordon Alexander, predeceased her. Mrs. Milliken's family wishes to thank the skilled nursing staff at The Tamalpais for the excellent care they gave her. Family members suggest any memorial contributions be made to the California Alumni Association, c/o The Patricia Alexander Milliken Scholarship Fund, 1 Alumni House, Berkeley, CA 94720-7520.
