Anthony Francis Silveira Born October 26, 1921, on the property now known as Marinwood, longtime Marin dairy rancher Anthony Francis (Tony) Silveira died March 9, 2012. He lived with steadfast purpose and conviction, dedicating himself to the ranching business that his beloved father, A.F. Silveira, started in 1900. "Silveira Ranches" still exists today, comprising two operations, one north of San Rafael and the other north of Novato, both bordering Highway 101. Tony spent memorable childhood years on the Miller Ranch (Marinwood) where his father's dairy business first operated. In the late 1920s, his father (founding president of Marin-Dell, Marin Dairymen's Milk Co., Ltd.), began purchasing the land neighboring St. Vincent's School for Boys, eventually establishing the San Rafael dairy and family home where they remain today. Tony was 15 years old when his father died in a ranch accident. Along with his siblings, he helped their mother, Mary E. Silveira, continue dairy operations not only at the San Rafael ranch but also at the "Burdell" Novato site where they had a second dairy. Since early 2003, Tony was the sole proprietor of the business. Tony attended Dixie School in the one-room schoolhouse now situated on Las Gallinas Avenue in Marinwood. He graduated from San Rafael High School (class of 1940) and then enrolled at the University of California at Davis. Tony was a lifetime member of the University of California Alumni Association, a 72-year member of the Native Sons of the Golden West as well as a member of the Marin County Farm Bureau, the Western United Dairymen and the Portuguese organization IDESST of Sausalito. Tony's respect and admiration for his parents guided him and fueled his stamina for what was a lifelong commitment to the family dairy business and land. He appreciated the good times and approached difficulties and challenges, including his health problems, with unwavering determination and courage. Tony was truly proud to carry on the Silveira dairy tradition and to be part of the history of Marin County, a place he considered so special. He is survived by Lorraine, his ever devoted wife of almost 65 years; his daughter Renee; daughter-in-law Susan; grandchildren Mary Elizabeth (husband Aldon Bolanos), Anthony Michael (fiancée Bree Saltsman) and Michael Joseph; as well as his brother George Silveira (sister-in-law Alice), his sister Jean O'Donnell (husband Leo) and his nieces and nephews. Tony was predeceased by his siblings Helen, Carlos, Dolores and Joseph; and his nephew William O'Donnell. His beloved son, Ronald Anthony Silveira, passed away in 2000. The visitation is 6:00 p.m., followed by the vigil service at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, March 15 at St. Raphael Church, 1004 Fifth Avenue, San Rafael. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the church on Friday, March 16, at 1 p.m., followed by entombment at the Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael. Memorial donations may be made to the Ronald A.
