LISA O'CONNOR Obituary

Lisa Cabiale O'Connor 1937-2012 74, of Mill Valley, peacefully passed away Monday, April 16, 2012 at her home after a long battle with lung cancer. A Rosary service will be at 7 p.m., Friday, April 20 and the funeral service will be at 11a.m., Saturday, April 21, followed by a reception, all at St. Hilary Church, 761 Hilary Dr., Tiburon, CA. Lisa was born on August 16, 1937 in Oakland to parents Dorothy and Luigi Cabiale. She was raised in the Bay Area, and was a familiar presence at her father's restaurant, Luigi's Bohemian Grotto, in Jack London Square. She attended Dominican Convent High School in San Rafael, CA, the University of Oregon and graduated with a Master's Degree from Cal State University Los Angeles. She became a licensed speech pathologist, and throughout her career has worked in private practice, clinical and academia in both Los Angeles and the Bay Area. For more than 20 years, Lisa was an associate professor and director of the Speech-Language Clinic at Cal State LA. Lisa and David moved to Mill Valley in 2003 to be near the center of her universe, their only granddaughter, Taylor. Lisa worked as a speech pathologist for STAR Academy of San Rafael and Progressus Therapy of Marin, also serving as the early intervention service provider. Throughout her career, Lisa concurrently worked in private practice. She loved working with children, making a profound difference in their lives by providing a voice and a future for many who struggled to communicate. Lisa served for four years as president of the California Speech-Language-Hearing Association (CSHA). For more than 12 years, Lisa served on the Legislative Advisory Council and as chair Ad Hoc Committee on Supervision for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Likewise, Lisa was a member of the Executive Board of the Council for Exceptional Children, as well as the President and Executive Board member of the Council of State Association Presidents, and on the Southern California Medical Speech Pathology and Audiology Council. She also was appointed by the Governor to serve on the California Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Licensing Board by the Governor of California, where she served as Chair. Lisa was recognized many times for her accomplishments in the speech-language profession. She was awarded the status of Fellow by both ASHA and CSHA, which is given to members who have shown outstanding contribution to the professions. In 2010, Lisa was presented with the State Clinical Achievement Award for California for efforts to facilitate the development of standards and promote appropriate and effective clinical supervision, and received the CSHA Lifetime Achievement Award and its highest recognition, the HONORS Award. Lisa was a woman of many talents. She was as adept speaking in front of a classroom or professional forum, as she was working her culinary magic in the family kitchen. She had a keen sense of style and grace, and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Lisa graciously offered her special talents to bring joy into others' lives and to help make her community better through her philanthropic and community involvement. Lisa is survived by her husband of 55 years, David; daughter Michela O'Connor Abrams and her husband, Alan; and granddaughter Taylor Elizabeth Abrams, and her furry grandson, Joey, all of Mill Valley. Lisa was preceded in death by her parents and half-sister, Ada Ammirati. We just heard the news and are so sad to hear about Lisa's passing. What a wonderful lady she was!

We had the delight of getting to know Lisa through our speech therapy sessions when my twins were just 2.5 yrs...and she had to stop seeing us after 6 months as my girls had far exceeded their speech goals! She took what could've been a stressful experience and made it enjoyable and taught us tips along the way. It was clear that she had a real gift and a delight in helping others.

Lisa was one of the most generous and kind people - one day she called and brought over a adorable giant hot pink beanbag chair for my girls and said, "your girls must have this - they'll love it!" (They did and we still enjoy it daily!). Another day, she came to visit and brought a tea set so the girls, who were 4 at the time, could have tea, cookies and visit with her...we weren't getting therapy anymore yet she wanted to see how the girls had grown, what they were doing...it was just so sweet and thoughtful!
She often mentioned David, Michaela and Taylor with such joy and love. It really was her passion to spend time with them whether it was kidsitting or going to one of Taylor's band's performances - it gave her such immense pleasure.

She will truly be missed and remembered fondly as such a kind-hearted and wonderful person! My heartfelt condolences go out to her family.

Warmly,
Cathy and family

Dear Lisa and family,

Very saddened to hear of your passing. My heart goes out to your family, and a special thought for your grandchild whom you always lovingly spoke about. Thank you for sharing your SLP wisdom with me while we worked at Progressus Therapy, I really looked up to you and your experiences and all that you have tirelessly contributed to our SLP field. We wouldn't be here without you to pave the way. I know that your Essence has indeed transited to a place where pain and suffering no longer dwells, and for that I know you are at peace. May you and your family know that all is Well and all is Love.

Lisa was my undergraduate and graduate clinical supervisor in the 80's. She hammered into her students that we must strive for the highest standards of professionalism. Her lessons have served me well all these years. Her legacy lives on in all of us who were fortunate enough to have trained with her and are still practicing speech pathology today. Dear David and Family,

I just learned of your dear Lisa's passing and wish to convey my sincerest condolences. Lisa was a truly remarkable woman and a passionately dedicated professsional. I have the highest respect for her.

We met approximately fifteen years ago while Lisa was supervising Cal State graduate students I was working as an SLP in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District. Lisa's keen guidance provided me with the tools to become a more astute supervisor and effective clinician. Lisa encouraged me to seek election to Legislative Counsel at ASHA and campaigned on my behalf. She guided me during my service there. I had the great honor of observing a truly committed leader at work fighting brilliantly and valiantly for the causes she believed in.

I am honored and humbled to have known her.

Sincerely,

Laura Garcia-Maxey

I am so sad to hear of Lisa's death and her battle with cancer. I had no idea! Lisa was a source of support and guidance to me when I applied to the Masters Program at CSULA. She supported me and had faith in me. Her candor and honesty was much appreciated. When our class graduated, she and David hosted a dinner at their home. She cooked and he bar- tended. It was LOVELY. I enjoyed catching up with Lisa at CSHA conventions in the years since I graduated. When she received an award at CSHA I had the pleasure of meeting Michaela and Taylor, both of whom I'd heard so much over the years. My deepest condolences to her family. She will be missed.

Lisa was a force of nature - she could accomplish anything and made sure, we, her students, could too. She helped me so much and was as equally a teacher as a SLP. Go with God, Mrs. O'Connor. You and Dr. Schery were The Program to me.

Lisa was one in a billion. Lisa was my mentor and friend who helped me through so many struggles when I was Chair at CSULA. I was the one with the title, she did most of the work. Lisa was always the first I would choose to be on a committee, the first I would ask for advice on a puzzling problem, and If I wanted someone on which to depend-- it would be Lisa. I always knew where she stood, and strong she stood in the stiff and often contraversial winds that promote growth and change. I will always remember her with great affection.. The words "That's Outrageous" will always make me smile and think of Lisa's prelude to battle! .Betty McMicken, CSU, Long Beach
