Obituary Condolences

Joan White Hebert Sept. 7, 1922 - May 4, 2012 Joan White Hebert passed away at home surrounded by family following a diagnosis of cancer. Joan was born in Fremont, Nebraska, and moved with her parents, Wilhelm White and Nora O'Connor, to Seattle when she was eight-years-of-age. She lived in Seattle and graduated from Holy Names Academy prior to attending Marylhurst College. Her education was far from complete, however, as she ventured to New York City to attend Columbia University where she earned an MS in Nutrition. UC Berkeley came next where she earned a PhD in Biochemistry/Nutrition in 1951. She married Frederick M. Hebert, M.D. in 1949 in Berkeley, CA; with whom she had seven children. The family moved to Fresno, CA in 1965, where she was active in the Mother's Club, the Parent Teacher Association, and Environmental Activism. Joan returned to her beloved Berkeley in 1972, where she reunited with friends and colleagues at St. Mary Magdalen Church. She also participated in prayer groups at the Graduate Theological Union. Joan loved her family home in Inverness, where she spent time enjoying great meals, reading, working crossword puzzles and exploring the beaches and wild flowers of West Marin County. She was a woman ahead of her time intellectually and all were blessed by her wit, charm, love, and care. We wish you a peaceful journey, and rest easy knowing that you have created a great good in your life. It has been an honor and a true joy to be loved by you, and you will be missed. Joan is survived by her children Frederick, Mary Reid (Michael), Anne (Ken Boese), Paul (Kristan Larsen), Nora (Patrick Link), Luke, and her daughter-in-law Kim Eastman-Hebert, and her grandchildren Nicholas and Courtney Reid, Connor and Maggie Link, Ashley, Lauren, and Ryan Hebert, and Michael, Aidan, and Sarah Boese. She is predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Frederick M. Hebert M.D. and her beloved son of 49 years, Denis Hebert. A funeral Mass will be held in Joan's honor on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 2005 Berryman Street, Berkeley, California. Donations may be made to the Berkeley Public Library or to Sutter VNA and Hospice.
