JAMES TOM Obituary
James Paul Tom "Tomwye" Age 99, a 63-year resident of San Francisco, passed away on June 2, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Oakland, CA, he received his civil engineering degree from U.C. Berkeley, and then adventured to China to work for the China Transportation Company and the Overseas American Red Cross when he met his beautiful wife, Irene. They returned to live in San Francisco in 1949 where he worked for the State of California Department of Transportation until his retirement in 1974. He enjoyed his 37 years of retirement as an amateur photographer, philatelist and lover of ballroom dancing. He was a longtime member and past president of the Chinese-American Institute of Engineers and a member of the Chinese- American Citizens Alliance. He was a thoughtful and gentle individual and was well liked by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Irene Ching Ying Tom, his daughters, Annie Tom Hoefs, Bernice Tom, Connie Tom Noguchi and Darlene Tom, 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. The family will hold his Celebration of Life on his 100th birthday in July.
