Ruth Elizabeth
(Schwabacher) Cecchetti

Was born in Wurzburg German, May 13, 1928 and died in Berkeley, California, Feb. 24, 2013. She lived for 30 years in Los Angeles and for the last ten years in Berkeley near her family. She was a graduate of Lowell High School and UC Berkeley.

A passionate educator, she taught English as a second language for nearly fifty years. She devoted much of her career to helping young people become global citizens focusing her time and effort on the Congress-Bundestag exchange program aimed at providing high school students experience in American and German culture and language. She was proud to receive an award from the German government for her work.

She was active in many groups, discussing books, writing her stories, and enjoying speaking German and Italian. Along the way, she embraced her adopted Italian culture, its people and history and her family there.

She found people and their stories fascinating, having lengthy conversations with both new acquaintances and old friends of all ages all over the world. She was generous with her time and energy; and always had a smile for family and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Giovanni Cecchetti; and is survived by her brother, Bill; her children, Stephen and Margaret; their spouses, Ruth and Carla; her grandchildren, Daniel, Ethan, Tony and Sonya; and scores of cousins, nieces, nephews and surrogate grandchildren around the world.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her honor to the Giovanni Cecchetti Graduate Award in the UCLA Department of Italian. This can be done by contacting Sarah Murphy at smurphy@support.ucla.edu
