(Vander Tuig) HarmsenBorn on April 27, 1928, in Sheldon, Iowa to Dick and Alice Vander Tuig. Her family moved to California when she was 8 years old. After living in and around the Handford area in Central California, the family started their own dairy farm in Westminster, California. Henrietta attended Excelsior High School in Artesia, however, she was needed at home and left school when she was in ninth grade. She married Richard Harmsen (World War II Veteran) on August 27, 1946. They were married for 56 years. She continued her education and received her High School diploma from the Pomona Unified School District in 1982. Her primary focus in life was her faith and family. Henrietta's faith in the Lord was very strong and she was a life-long member of the Christian/United Reformed Church. Her hobbies and talents were numerous, including being an expert seamstress, knitting, crocheting, bowling, gardening, and bike riding. She also loved traveling (especially motor-homing) and participated in missionary and other church functions, such as Project Phillip, (prison ministry), Faith 20 (answering telephone Bible questions), and Mobile Missionary Assistant Program (MMAPers), a program of volunteers that are willing to travel and provide a variety of services from constructing/repairing buildings to mending clothes. She lived in the Inland Empire (Chino/Ontario) area for 53 years. She will be deeply missed by her children: Alverna Bouwman (Bill), Janie (Paul) Ridgeway, James (RuthAnn) Harmsen, Rich (Tammy) Harmsen, and Susan (Jeffrey) Eigenbrood; 13 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren and other family members: Sylvester (Arlene) Vander Tuig; Gertrude (Henry) Doctor; Mary Jean (Stanley) Vanden Brink; Dale (Glenda) Vander Tuig, and sisters in law: Esther Vander Tuig, Wilma Harmsen, Alice Douma, Geneva (Matt) Andriese, and numerous nieces and nephews. She died on April 13, 2013 at Inland Christian Home. She was preceded in death by her parents: Dick and Alice Vander Tuig; her husband: Richard Harmsen; her brothers: Milen and Lambert Vander Tuig; and her son: Henry Dale Hamsen; her son-in-law: Gilbert Gaalswyk; and grandchildren: David Bouwman and Jenny Gonzalez. Visitation with family and friends will be at Inland Christian Home Fellowship Center on Wednesday, April 17 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Memorial service will be held at First United Reformed Church, 6159 Riverside Drive, Chino on Thursday, April 18 at 10:00 am. Interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, CA.
