Roy Arnold Hunter
October 14, 1931 - February 15, 2014
Roy Arnold Hunter kissed his wife goodbye one last time, gave one last squeeze of her hand, and slipped away into God's arms. All is now peaceful and pain-free in his world as God lifted him into His.
Born October 14, 1931, in Portland, Oregon, Roy attended Milwaukie District Elementary School and Milwaukie and Seaside (class of 1949) high schools, as well as Oregon State U. While his early roots were in the Portland area, he was a pseudo-native of Southern California having settled here in 1967. His service in the Air Force spanned 20 years until he retired in 1971 as Master Sergeant. Some duty stations took him to Philippines, Hawaii, and Japan, and during his military career he received the USAF Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster.
Returning to civilian life, he worked with Prudential Insurance until 1974, during which time he was recruited by American Research Bureau (forensic genealogy, searching for missing and unknown heirs in estate cases). When that firm closed, he opened Hunter Estate Investigations as sole proprietor, and frequently confirmed that this was the most interesting and satisfying career of his life. He actively pursued this business until 1996 when he retired and looked forward to sharpening his golf game. He held the California licenses of insurance sales and private investigator.
While a teenager in Oregon he joined the Order of DeMolay, served as Master Counselor, attained the Degree of Chevalier (1951) as a charter member of Oregon City Chapter, and served as State Chaplain in 1949. Much later in life, he joined the San Gabriel Masonic Lodge (Arcadia), and Royal Arch bodies.
March 2, 1974, finally brought great happiness to him when he married Jo Hunter, a lifelong Episcopalian. They resided in Alhambra until 1996. In 1975, Roy was baptized and confirmed in the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour, San Gabriel. Upon moving to Coachella
Valley's Sun City in 1996, they attended St. Paul's of the Desert (Palm Springs) and in 2003 affiliated with St. Margaret's, Palm Desert. He was actively involved in the Men's Guild, and served on the vestry of COS and St. Paul's as well as an usher at all parishes. In addition, he served on the board of the West San Gabriel Valley Boys' and Girls' Club, and was active in supporting the work of Our Saviour Center Outreach Program.
In 2013 Roy and Jo moved from Palm Desert to Long Beach, returning closer to family. By then, glaucoma had caused the elusive golf ball to hide in the grass, and family was a cherished substitute for the greens!
Roy was predeceased by parents, Florence (Handley) and Clarence E. Hunter; sister and brother-in-law, Lois and James Cooper; in-laws Stella and Art Macdonald, and grandson Michael Barger, USN.
Roy is survived by his loving wife, Jo of Long Beach; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Ralph Freathy of Florida; and children, their spouses, and grandchildren: Sheryl and Samuel Schreiner parents of Lark and Ryan Asbury; Raven and Victoria Schreiner; Jordan and Amanda Schreiner; and William Schreiner; and son Scott Lumbert, parent of Olivia, all of Oregon; Kerri and Ric Gentry, Jaimi and Michael Keller parents of Samantha and Noah; Traci and Alex Ortiz parents of Phillip, Courtney, Kelsey, and Allie; and Glenn Hunter and daughter, Bree, all California; as well as Dianne Barger mother of Adam Barger and Amanda and Chad Sanford of Washington.
