Rudolph "Rudy" Villegas
1967 - 2014
Devoted brother, nephew, uncle, godfather and coach
Our beloved Rudy passed away Wednesday, April 16 at his Lakewood home. Rudy was born on June 24, 1967 in Lakewood, CA to parents Gene and Olivia Villegas. He grew up in the community attending grammar school at Horace-Mann Elementary school. He also attended Roosevelt Junior High School, and he graduated from Mayfair High School in 1985. He went on to receive a Baccalaureate Degree from California State University, Fullerton.
The son of a coach and AYSO Area Director, Rudy stepped onto the pitch at 9 years-old and never stepped off. As a player, coach, referee, board member and instructor from Region 106, his love for the game and everything it stood for was evident. Dedicating 30 years of his life to coaching, Rudy was able to share his passion for the game with thousands of children, focusing on the attributes of team work, focus, dedication but most importantly fun.
While his love for the game was undeniable, his dedication to family trumped all. Rudy was a family man at heart whether playing Call of Duty with his nephew, enjoying a Galaxy game with his nieces or babysitting his godchildren, Rudy played an active role to all.
Rudy is survived by: his sister, Christina Villegas-Pezo (Adriel); nieces Olivia and Victoria Pezo; nephew Christian Pezo; godchildren Brooke and Colton Smith; aunts Frances Browning, Elsa Barrios and Rose Villegas; uncles Claude Browning, Ruben Barrios, Alfred Barrios and Bill Villegas; and cousins Dolores Smith (Alessio), James Barrios (Jody), Larry Barrios, David Sevilla (Diana), Nicholas Sevilla, Linda Sevilla, Michelle Barrios, Tiffany Barrios and Billy Villegas (Jamie).
In closing, Rudy's outlook on life can be summed up in stating "We are rich only through what we give, and poor only through what we refuse." He will truly be missed by all who were lucky to know him and were blessed to call him a friend.
