Alice Claire Morgan Newsom Obituary

Alice Claire Morgan Newsom

Alice Claire Morgan Newsom was born on February 19, 1914 she lived a full and storied 100 years leaving peacefully in her sleep on April 17, 2014.
She was born in Lindsey, CA and was the youngest of 5 children. As a sophomore at Whittier High School, she met "the love of her life", W. Roy Newsom. They married 1931 and spent 63 wonderful years together.
They raised their 3 children, Herb, Janine and Nina in Whittier where they would stay for the remainder of their years. In the early years, she was not only a mother but she worked for the County of Los Angeles as the Executive Secretary to the Chairman of the Board of Supervisors. She did this in order to help support the family while Roy was getting his Ph.D at the University of Southern California.
Alice was very active in the community. She was the founding President of the Whittier Republican Women's Club, a member of the Assistance League for over 40 years and active in Whittier PEO for over 60 years. Alice also volunteered for Book Mobile and delivered Meals on Wheels until she was 93. In honor of her service to the community she was named Children's Hospital Woman of the Year in 1976. Roy and Alice also loved Whittier College. When Roy was working for the college, Alice was very active in the Whittier College Women's Auxiliary. They spent over 40 years giving willingly and generously to the college. In recognition of her long-standing service to both the community and the college, in 2003 Alice was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Whittier College.
Outside of Whittier, much of their free time was spent in Santa Paula on their ranch working on the grove either picking up rocks, fertilizing or planting and ultimately enjoying the fruits of their labor. This became a very special place for Newsom family gatherings. It is hard to believe there was any time left but she also enjoyed many hobbies such as bridge, knitting and sewing and making the best pies!
Alice ("Gram, Mother, Mom") will be most remembered as the matriarch of our family. She loved nothing more than having her 3 children and spouses, 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren around and celebrating all of life's events together. She made each and everyone she touched feel special. She celebrated all of our joys with us and was always there when we needed a hug. We will miss her tremendously but we are grateful for all of the time we spent with her, everything she taught us and all of our wonderful memories. We will carry her in our hearts forever.
As a birthright Quaker, she belonged to The First Friends Church of Whittier for most of her life. Her Memorial Service will be held there on Saturday, May 3rd at 4pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Roy and Alice Newsom Scholarship Fund at Whittier College www.whittier.edu/giveonline.
