FRED BREMER Obituary

Fred H. Bremer, PhD A resident of Redlands, California, died on November 20 at 87 years of age. He was born on February 23, 1923, in Northfork, West Virginia. The son of a highway engineer, as a child he lived in West Virginia, Texas and South Carolina. Dr. Bremer was a student at the University of South Carolina before enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1942, seeing service in Burma and India as a radio man and navigator on B-24 bombers. He was briefly stationed at McCook Air Base in Nebraska, where he met the former Evelyn Estergard of Cambridge, Nebraska, whom he married following his discharge in 1945. An educator by profession, Dr. Bremer received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees at the University of Nebraska. He then went on to receive his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Texas. Among the positions he held, Dr. Bremer was Superintendant of Schools and President of McCook Junior College from 1958 to 1963. In 1967, after holding leadership positions at Santa Ana College and Chapman College, he joined the new Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California as Vice President and Dean of Instruction. He was elevated to Superintendent of Saddleback College District and President of Saddleback College in August of 1968. Dr. Bremer retired in 1987 as Saddleback's President Emeritus. He is survived by his son, Bill Bremer of Rochester, New York; his granddaughter Kristin Villano, her husband Jerry, and his great- grandsons, Cameron Brock and Roman Villano, of Colorado; his sister Gene Price of Redlands; his nephew, Stephen Wilke and his wife, Suzanne, of Tennessee; and his niece, Tish Woodman of Redlands. Dr. Bremer was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Bremer, who died in 1993; his grandson Roger Bremer; and his parents, Henry and Nell Bremer. He served because he cared.

Fred and I were office mates at Saddleback College for many years. After Fred retired I did go many times to Redlands and have lunch with Fred and his lovely wife. I will say now what I hope people say about me when I pass: He always treated me with kindness. Jim Yates

To the family of Dr.Fred Bremer. It was a pleasure to have served your father with his care in his home. The loss of this great man has also affected me greatly. He is forever in my heart.
