George W. Sjostrand Obituary
George Sjostrand
George W. Sjostrand passed away peacefully on January 31, 2014 in Santa Clarita, California, with his family by his side. He was born to Swedish immigrants Emil and Hilda Sjostrand in Duluth, Minnesota on April 18th, 1918 . George moved to San Bernardino, California in 1936, where he attended his senior year in high school.
George graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1937 before becoming the first night school graduate from San Bernardino Valley College where he earned an A.A. degree. After serving as an assistant chaplain in WWII, he worked in the banking industry while attending Southwestern University School of Law, where he earned a Juris Doctorate Degree in 1953. He was a Deputy City Attorney for the Los Angeles Court's Criminal Division before opening a law office in San Bernardino. He practiced criminal and family law for many years, and also taught Business Law at San Bernardino Adult Evening High School and Skadron College.
He served as chairman of the San Bernardino Citizens' Council for the Public Schools, chairman of the Inter-Service Club, vice chairman for the Action Committee for San Bernardino, president and civic chairman of the San Bernardino Argonaut Club, community service chairman and vice commander of San Bernardino American Legion Post 14, vice president of the San Bernardino County Board of Education for five years and president of the San Bernardino County Board of Education for 10 years.
George loved religious studies, philosophy and poetry, and attended many Shakespearian Festivals. He held a deep passion for travel, visiting many countries throughout his life. His favorite place in the world was Hawaii, and at one time planned on retiring to Waikiki. He remained dedicated to his love of education, even in his final days. He will be missed by many, and those many know the impact he made on his community, and his family. We will miss his tenderhearted lectures, his twinkling blue eyes, his infectious giggle and his very silly jokes.
George is preceded in death by his wife, Lilla Mitchell Sjostrand of San Bernardino; his daughter, Rita Sjostrand Denson of Modesto and his brother, Thor Sjostrand Sr. of San Francisco. He is survived by his brother Roy Sjostrand of Los Angeles, two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A service in his honor will take place on February 15, 2014, 1pm. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 785 N. Arrowhead Blvd., San Bernardino 92401. Memorial donations in his honor may also be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
