Henry Harkema Obituary

Henry Harkema Henry (Hank) Harkema celebrated his 100th year on August 7, 2011 with many family members and good friends. He was born in Iowa in 1911 to John and Gertrude Harkema, their second son. Four more sons were added later. The family migrated West and eventually settled in Hynes Clearwater, which is now Paramount. He was employed at several locations before being drafted into the military and served during the entire European campaign and returned home in 1945. Henry married his wife, Betty, in 1946 and soon started a family of 3 daughters, Christine (Rick) Cormany; Julia (Michael) Verrengia; and Sylvia (Rudy) Tatarin; grandchildren, Chrystal, Jennifer (Jeff), Joshua, Cindy, Jeffrey, and Jenna; great-grandsons, Bryson & Bennett. Henry is also survived by his brother, Roy; and sister-in-law, Betty; and many loving nieces and nephews. The family was his proudest posession. Henry was elected to Paramount City Council and served for 17 years. At age 91 he decided to hang up his hat and try something new, so he retired from the Council. However, in true Henry style, he made sure to leave an impression. He still holds the record for being the oldest serving City Council member in the state of California! In addition to serving on the Council Henry was also active in Paramount Methodist Church and many other organizations. All of his adult life was centered on healthy living with LOTS of vitamins! He took pride in the fruits and vegetables grown in his garden and getting his grandchildren to eat healthy without them even knowing it. One of Henry's biggest peeves was seeing young kids drink soda and eat fast food. Henry was an advocate of positive thinking, productive living, and not letting the little things in life get to him. He loved traveling, playing poker machines, hunting, camping, gardening, and story telling - especially those war stories! Many times Henry would be unable to finish a story without laughing before reaching the end of it. Henry and Betty were married for 65 1/2 years and have always considered Paramount their home. They both have many long time friendships. His long life ended on August 31, 2011. A celebration of his wonderful life will be on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 from 1:00-4:00 pm at Progress Park, 15500 Downey Avenue, Paramount. All are invited. Henry - we guarantee to keep you and the angels entertained by recalling our favorite stories and memories of you. Rest in peace, Captain. Grandpa you've been gone 9 years now, and in that 9 years I got married and started a family. You have another great grandson, and an amazing grandson-in-law. We bought a house and I even started my own garden. There's not a day that goes by that we don't think about you or miss you. Love you

My Dear Grandpa - you were truly an inspiration to all who had the honor of knowing you. Thank you for teaching me many invaluable life lessons, but most of all, thank you for teaching me to believe and how to be a better person. Your courage over 100 years is nothing short of remarkable. You'll be greatly missed, but I know you're at peace and looking down on all of us. I love you!

Dear Uncle Hank,

Your proved to me that you knew how to live life! Your tenacity, honesty, strength and humor was inspiring and unstopable. My dad, Kenny, admired you so much and shinned when he told the story of you coming and surprising him at Walter Reid hospital during WWll while he was a patient there. The uncles, all together, were truly an awesome force. When we moved to Reno I looked forward to the 'goose hunt' visits, when all the brothers would come up, along with cousins of course, and the wonderful times we had. I will always remember your stories, infectious laughter and incredible memory. You left us all with enough lessons and memories to enjoy for a lifetime. I feel so lucky to be part of this family!

I send my love and sympathy,

Karen Harkema Duc and all

Dear Uncle Hank,
You have always been an inspiration to me and I will miss you. You were always such a positive person and full of laughter. And the stories! It was the high light of the Harkema clan to sit and listen to the stories you told about growing up on the farm with your brothers. All of the brothers including you had incredible memories recalling the names of the teachers and neighbors with ease. I have a small story I would like to pass on about you. One day when I was a teenager growing up in Reno me and a friend went on a walk with you around Rattlesnake Mountain down the long winding dirt road that extends toward the South. My friend and I had pity on you because you were 'old' and would soon tire and turn back. Well, by the end of the walk me and my friend could not go any further. This 'old' man was walking us into the ground and not taking any mercy on us.

Rest in peace Uncle Hank - I will never forget you.

You will be missed by many Hank. It is hard to think of the Harkema family, without thinking of you. You were such a part of everything. It is hard to believe you did all the things you did in only 100 years. I will never forget you. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Rest in peace Grandpa. I love you! I will never go camping, make pancakes, or pick fruits or vegetables from a garden without thinking of you! I was blessed to have so many wonderful memories to pass onto my children. You will be missed, but never forgotten.
