Joel and I were pen pals in the 80s when he took over vocals in Rhino 39 and I recall him being a super friendly, nice, helpful warm guy even at that young an age (and I think he and I are the same age.) I was a big fan of the band from their first single on and saw them many times. Anyway, very sad and sorry to see this news. My condolences to his family and friends.

I just heard. When the space shuttle exploded I remember his first reaction was, " they died stoked". I only wish that had been the case for Joel. My sympathies and best wishes go to Denise and their family.

I am heartbroken and in shock. I loved Joel. He was the most special and unique person I've ever met. I always kept a place for him in my mind and heart and looked forward to the day I would run into him again. Joel was magical. I never felt equal to him, he was so amazingly charismatic and kind. Wherever we went, he would just start talking and minutes later there would be a crowd around him, as mesmerized as I at every word that came out of his mouth. Joel, I love you. You knew that. Your spirit has stayed with me since the day we met, maybe you are not here now but my love for you is the same. I'm sure God has a great purpose for you in heaven. A modern day St. Christopher perhaps. Nothing less. I'm so sad. Everytime I go to Parker's I look at the carasoul and think of you and smile. I will always do that. I love you. Thank you for the time we spent together. I was blessed to have known you. I feel like a part of my body has been chopped off. A peice of me is missing now. God bless your wife and family. I first met Joel at Stanford Jr High 1978 Skimboarded & Skateboarded with him a lot. Joel was a great artist, a natural comedian, and well rounded talented musician. He will be missed!

A second entry: I want to give love to Lisa and I hope she remembers me. I have looked on line for as much info on Joel as I could find and I see you, Lisa, in photos of Joel's wedding. I am very curious to know how you guys are, how your children are ... I really am so sad about this. I will see everyone at diPiazza's on the 3rd.
P.S. Joel liked to tease me. I wasn't punk enough. Ha-ha! I love you, Joel. Damn, you are and will continue to be missed.

I tried to get a hold of Joel over the past few years, but I didn't try hard enough. I missed him, and now I don't get to catch up with him ... the news has made me very sad. I am so sorry for Denise, whom I never met. I knew Joel more when he was in Rhino-39. I used to go to almost all of their rehearsals and gigs for that period of time. I will be at diPiazza's to pay my respects and give warmth to anyone who wants it. I have a few stories of some of our adventures, good times, troubled times, and those both frustrating and hilarious times where Joel loved being contrary with me just to get my ire up! Love to all, and sorrow over this very sad loss. I really wish I had seen him these past years, damn it.
