John Haynes Obituary

OCT. 8, 1935 - OCT. 27, 2010 John Haynes, son of Lyman and Edna Haynes, died October 27, 2010, after losing his battle with bladder cancer. He was the third of four siblings Mary Alice, Donald and Jerry. John attended school in Flora, Illinois. He was an avid athlete in both high school and throughout his life, with a love for tennis and basketball. John participated in the High School marching band, playing the French horn. He attended Illinois Wesleyan College in Bloomington, IL majoring in Psychology. John married Glenda Phillips in 1953 and during their 21 year marriage, they had five children. John was remarried to Lee Ann Gilmore in 1983 and had one child. Lee Ann was a devoted wife for 27 years and they shared many memorable vacations on cruises and in their RV. John achieved numerous accomplishments during his lifetime. He was particularly proud of his 30 year association with Kiwanis International. John played an instrumental role in establishing an annual Special Olympics Equestrian competition for physically and/or mentally challenged athletes. Warner Center Kiwanis Foundation was created to support this event which still occurs today. He invented and obtained a US Patent for "Slide Guide". John always saw the good in people. He will be missed by family and friends alike who were touched by his kindness and generosity. John is survived by his wife, Lee Ann; his siblings; six children, Tim (Debra), Ron (Carol), Jeff (Jerrie), Angela, Nicole (Walter) and Allison: thirteen grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in John's memory for Special Olympics at: Warner Center Kiwanis Foundation ATTN: Linda Rise 23521 Tiara St., Woodland Hills, CA 91367. Please put John's name on the memo line. A memorial service for John will be on Saturday, October 30, 2010, 1:00 p.m., at St. Stephen Presbyterian Church, 20121 Devonshire St., Chatsworth, CA 91311.
