Leslie Gire Obituary

GIRE-Leslie Monroe Gire 1910 - 2010 Leslie (Les) passed away on December 14, four months after his 100th birthday, in Whittier less than a mile from the Pickering Ave. home where his family moved from Kansas in 1912. Les and his first wife Yvonne, raised their two children in Whittier where for many years he was a Boy Scout leader with St. Marys Troop 498. After Yvonne died in 1982, Les remained very active in the La Habra Kiwanis Club and joined an East Whittier senior tennis group. He moved to Kauai in 1986 and hosted the Whittier tennis group on several occasions. In 1994, he married Grace, a member of the group and they lived in Kauai until 2003 when they returned to Whittier. Their love and devotion made his final years rewarding despite declining health. Les is survived by his devoted wife, Grace Gire and his children Joanne O'Day of Denver, Colorado and Leroy Gire of McKenzie Bridge Oregon, six grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Those wishing to remember Les are requested to submit a donation to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation w

My father stressed the importance of a good education and made certain that his children were provided one. It is a trait they we passed on to our children and they in turn to their children......His work ethic was second to none and as typical with his generation communicated his love for his children by actions not words.
