Mary Schnabel

SCHNABEL -Mary Schnabel, of Apple Valley, CA (formerly of Huron, South Dakota) died July 14, 2003 in Victorville, CA. Mary Nuss was born February 26, 1909 in Reliance, South Dakota to August and Carolina (Mettler) Nuss. She was educated in Alpena, S.D. She married Ben Schnabel April 1, 1929 in Alpena, S.D. They lived in several communities throughout S.D., settling in Huron in the spring of 1950. She worked as a waitress at George's Cafe in the Tams Ho tel and the Marvin Hewitt Hotel Coffee Shop before moving to La Puente, CA in September 1960. She worked in several restaurants in the Covina and La Puente, CA areas. Her husband died in January 1973 and she lived alone until September 2000 when she moved in with her daughter, Betty in Valinda, CA. In January 2003, she moved to Apple Valey, CA to live with her daughter, Judy. She lived there until going to the Desert Knolls Care Center due to ill health. She was an active member of the Puente Hills Baptist Church in Covina, CA. Mary is survived by eight children, Arlene (Emra) Counts, Nampa, Idaho, Donald (Darlene), Alta Loma, CA, Wallace (Patricia), West Covina, CA, John (Lila), Huron, S.D., Rose (Leroy) Slepikas, Huron, S.D., Benjamin (Carolyn), Apple Valley, CA, Betty Pohl, Valinda, CA, and Judith (Glenn) Anderson, Apple Valley, CA; 23 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren, several step-grandchildren and step great grandchildren; 1 sister, Martha Johnson of Sioux City, Iowa an d many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, 2 sons, Laverne at age 2 and Darrell in 1981, her parents, 1 brother, John, and 7 sisters, Justina Bietz, Bea Schnabel, Lena Vasknetz, Anna Neiffer, Pauline Nuss, Ella Neu and Esther Bullock. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 17th from 5:00-9:00 P.M. with a memorial service on Friday, July 18th at 1:30 P.M. at Custer Christiansen Mortuary, West Covina. Services will also be held at the Welters Funeral Home in Huron, South Dakota a t a later date. Interment will be at Virgil Cemetery in Virgil, South Dakota.
