NORINE HAMERDINGER Obituary

Age 76, died on December 15, 2010, at Willow Creek Memory Care Center in Las Vegas, NV, after a lengthy illness with Alzheimer's disease. She was the youngest of three, born September 22, 1934, in Allegheny County, PA, to Clarence Duke and Agnes Marie Moody Duke. She grew up with her parents and siblings in Steubenville, OH. She graduated from Marquette University in 1956 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech. She continued her education at the University of California, Riverside Extension, furthering her studies in education. Trained as a Speech and Hearing Pathologist, she worked with a number of Southern California school districts, helping children with special needs. She spent the majority of her career in the Etiwanda School district as a Speech and Hearing Pathologist and later as the district Coordinator of Special Education Services. She retired from Etiwanda School District in 1994 after 23 years of service. She was a passionate educator, advocate for children, an esteemed colleague and mentor to many. She lived in Southern California most of her life, raising five children. After retirement, she volunteered at William R. Lummis Elementary School and Willow Creek Memory Care. She enjoyed many friendships throughout her life, especially those with "The Girls" she graduated with from Marquette. She enjoyed cooking, ballroom dancing, travel, boating, fishing, sewing, and quilting. She was active with Calvary Assembly of God Church and Summerlin Community Baptist Church in Las Vegas. Although small in stature, she was known for her great warmth, concern for others and limitless amount of energy. Norine is survived by her husband of 19 years, Randolph "Randy" Hamerdinger of Las Vegas, NV; her sons, William "Bill" Brewer of Denver, CO, and Robert "Bob" Brewer of Prescott, AZ; her step daughter, Shawn Stevens of Upland, CA; and step son, Scott Stevens of Overton, NV; and grandchildren, Christina Brewer of Madera, CA, and J.C. Stevens of Lodi, CA. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" Brewer, her brothers, Clarence James Duke and John Thomas Duke, and parents, Clarence and Marie Duke. Memorial Services will be held in mid January, and arrangements are pending. For memorial service information, please contact [email protected]. I was lucky enough to work with Norine Duke Hamerdinger when she was the program director for Special Education in the Etiwanda School District, participating in the West End SELPA. Norine was a guiding light for this group of directors, an outstanding advocate for children, and just a delight to know. I am so sorry for your loss.
