Richard Bert Owen Brooks
On Tuesday, July 2nd, 2013, Richard Brooks, 68, passed away peacefully, at home surrounded by family and friends after a struggle with cancer. He was guided home by our Lord.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents Hubert and Rose Brooks. He is survived by his wife of thirty-six years, Janet Koehler-Brooks, his sons, Bradley Brooks of San Antonio, Texas, Evan and Matthew Brooks of Fontana, grandchildren, Ian, Blythe, and Cynthia Brooks, his sister Nancy Jackson and her husband Jerry of Honolulu, Hawaii, his sister-in-law, Nancy Koehler, sister-in-law Nina Mitchell and her husband Homer, numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews, and his beloved dog, Lilli. Richard also leaves behind caregivers Shana Rodriguez and Alexzandra Lowers and all of the wonderful and loyal friends he was so blessed to have had.
Richard was born on May 25, 1945, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He attended Radford High School, Maunaloa, College, Hawaii, Oklahoma City University and played football for the University of Oklahoma where he received his Bachelors degree. Richard served his country beginning in 1967 in the
with tours in Vietnam. He served aboard three ships: the USS Ranger, the USS Oriskany, and the USS Coral Sea. After developing his career through military service, Richard worked as an aerial photographer in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Richard and Janet were married in 1977 and spent their first two years in Hawaii. He continued working as an aerial photographer for two years in the bay area and then located in Fontana. Richard was a resident of Fontana for 32 years. He worked as a Code Enforcement Specialist and retired as an Environmental Control Specialist for the City of Fontana after 30 years of service.
He was a member of Crosspointe Community Church, the Kiwanis Club of Fontana, a life member of Amvets Charles Koehler Post 1240, Fontana Historical Society, Friends of the Library, a life member and 3rd degree Master Mason of Pearl Harbor Lodge, F & A.M., and a founding leader of Boy Scouts of America, Troop 502 of Fontana. Richard served as a scout leader during his military years and as Troop 502's Assistant Scout Leader, he received the Community Scout Award and the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service. He joined the Boy Scouts at age 8 and achieved the rank of Life Scout. In all, he gave over 50 years to Boy Scouts of America. Richard was instrumental in starting a food basket program in 1982 for needy F.U.S.D. students. Along with support from Troop 502, BSA, the program assisted hundreds of families over the years.
Visitation will take place at Dickey Mortuary on Wednesday, July 10th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The service will take place at Crosspointe Community Church, 17244 Randall Ave., Fontana on Thursday, July 11th at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park, 11715 Cedar Ave., Bloomington, California.
Dickey Mortuary is entrusted with the arrangements.
