December 15, 1915 – October 26, 2010

Called Mr. Flooky by his friends and customers, was usually seen driving in his yellow and black striped Caddy and was always there to greet all his customers with a smile and a firm hand shake with his famous saying, "Shake hands like a man".

Born Stanley Hoffenberg Dec.15, 1915, he started selling his RED HOTS in Gary Indiana at his first road side food stand in 1930. In the 1940's he opened up Hollywood Venetian Blind Co. on the south side of Chicago. In the 1950's Stanley opened up Surplus Toys which at that time boasted the largest variety of Toys in Chicago. He also ventured in oil in Texas where he picked up the moniker Stan Houston. In 1959 he opened Flooky's Hot Dogs on the south side of Chicago.

In 1965 with his son Stuart, they opened up the first of 38 restaurants in Sherman Oaks where they successfully built, operated, sold and franchised their Flooky's Chicago Style Hot Dogs restaurants, miniature golf, bating cages & opened the first Pin Ball Arcade in Ca. Voted Best Hot Dogs in LA 15 years in a row.

Always keeping active and fit, in his 80's he turned his talents to becoming a successful sculpture, artist and later became know as Stan Mr.Flooky Esquire The Ring Man and gave away thousands of his famous real dollar bill rings to customers and friends.

The wonderful Mr. Flooky and his son, Stuart, were like the caregivers/babysitters for my three brothers and me at the Flooky's in Sherman Oaks. My parents would drop us four kids off and let Mr. Flooky and Stuart take care of us. Ha ha! But that's the truth!

Later, my dad would come back, get us the best chocolate egg cream sodas, Chicago-style hot dogs, and fries and talk to Mr. Flooky and Stuart. Mr. Flooky liked to talk to my dad partly because my dad was also from Chicago and was a major games manufacturer here in L.A. and the Valley. I believe Mr. Flooky was from Chicago and at one time had a toy business there.

I can still see the pinball machines and the rest they had there and Mr. Flooky making and wearing the rings made out of dollar bills. I have many great memories of Flooky's on Ventura Blvd. and Cedros!

I'm very sorry for the loss of the wonderful Mr. Flooky. With his great food, entertainment, and friendly demeanor, he brought a lot of joy and happiness to many children growing up in the San Fernando Valley, including me.

Thank you to Stuart and his great dad, the one and the original Mr. Flooky for some happy times in the Valley a "few" years back.

With my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of this great man.
I will always have fond memories of going to Flooky's with my daughter almost 4 decades ago. Stan had a way of greeting you as if he was inviting you into his home. What a great guy, and those delicious hot dogs kept me coming back! He will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.
Rest in peace!
Bill
