WEST, Virginia Ong
Darling wife and mother of four, Virginia Ong West passed away on November 20th, 2013 at home surrounded by family in Altadena, CA. Virginia was born on May 25, 1925, in Hollywood, CA., and was 29 for most of her life. She is survived by Devon Gaylord West, husband of 66 years, and her four children; Christopher, Cynthia, Kent, and Lance. She leaves ten grandchildren; Meera, Mason, Angelica, Catriona, Katie, Anika, Amanda, Garet, Chad and Ian; and one great grandson, Devon.
Virginia loved to swim and ski. Some of her fondest memories were of her childhood at Balboa Island with her family and hiking in the High Sierras at the Fuller Cabin. She had a great love of animals and always had a pet at her side. Her love of travel took her to the far reaches of the globe, but she always came home. She was committed to both her own family, and to families everywhere. Virginia was a spiritual person, and a lifelong Presbyterian.
From her earliest years at Altadena Elementary School, Virginia was a scholar. She graduated UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and a teaching credential. She taught elementary school in the San Marino school district. She was a lifelong member of Kappa Alpha Theta, and volunteered all her life for the sorority.
Virginia was a passionate volunteer. She was a Board Member of the USC Panhellenic Council for 30 years, a recipient of the John Hubbard Award, a lifetime Altadena Guild Member, involved with the PTA for all four children, and a member of the Tradewinds and Clipper Club Church Group.
There will be a memorial service on December 3rd at 2 PM, La Canada Presbyterian Church in the Cook Chapel, 626 Foothill Blvd, La Cañada Flintridge, CA., 91101.
