He was born on December, 2, 1936, in Pico Rivera, the son of late Francis and Hansen Gilmore. He was the only son of four siblings.
Robert was raised in Baldwin Park California where he graduated from Baldwin Park High School in 1955. He attended Mount San Antonio College and worked for Crawely's in Baldwin Park.

While with the LAPD he met and married Ramona Whiles in June of 1962 and they had two beautiful daughters and a son. Robert then met the love of his life Luana Chance, married her, and together had three handsome sons and one daughter. He was always busy with projects around the house (laying brick) and was constantly working on his mosaic tile stepping stones and detailed Christmas decorations. He had a love for the ocean and a collection of sea memorabilia that anyone would notice when entering his home. Robert is survived by his daughters, Terry, Jennifer and Stacey; sons Jim, Steve and Larry; 20 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; sisters Pam and Cindy; 11 nieces and nephews; brother in laws Bruce and Doug and his sister in law Diane Chance.
