John Stephen Ostling quietly passed away May 27, 2012, in his sleep after spending a peaceful day with friends. John was 63 years old. A graduate of Bassett High School, he attended Mt. SAC where he developed his fascination with astronomy. John was an employee of the Claremont Colleges for many years.
John had a fun-loving spirit and was game for almost anything. A fan of all modes of transportation involving wheels, his boyhood enjoyment of bicycles and go-karts grew into his adult passion of tinkering with cars, including a string of Volkswagon "Bugs." His most prized car ever was a 1929 Model A, in which he spent many fun times cruising the neighborhood with friends and family. He loved old classic movies, especially silent movies and slapstick comedies. John was known for his tender heart, and some of the family's most cherished pets were a result of his empathy for an animal in need.
John is survived by his daughter and granddaughter Jessica and Lili Humphrey of Wrightwood, brothers Jerry and Jim Ostling, sister and brother-in-law Susan and Keith Schildt, and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.John will be remembered by those who truly knew him as a man of deep kindness, spirit, and compassion. He will live on in their memories.
John will be laid to rest at Rose Hills in Whittier, Friday June 8, in a graveside ceremony at 11:00 AM.
