Merodine (Merry) Flinchbaugh peace- fully lost her battle with cancer on April 9, 2013 at the age of 91, with her daughter, son, grandson and his wife at her side. Merry was a resident at Royal Oaks Retirement Manor at the time of her passing. Merry was a native Californian born January 17, 1922 who was educated in the Pasadena School system and graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Elementary Education, thus fulfilling her dream of being the best and most loved teacher for 26 years with the Pasadena Unified School District.
She began teaching at Jackson Elementary School with first graders, and then moved to Jefferson Elementary School where she taught grades 1-5, with 3rd grade being her favorite. She was one of the founding members of the Mountain Dancer Folk Dance Group and remained active until the very end. Merry was a member of PEO Chapter FB-JL, and the Altadena Guild of the Huntington Hospital. She was a docent at Huntington Gardens for 17 years where she gave guided tours and taught plant reading to children. She was also a volunteer at the Gift Shop in the Huntington Memorial Hospital for 15 years.
In Merry's early years, she was an avid golfer for the Altadena Town and Country Club where she won many tournaments and was on numerous committees. She was an avid skier and her favorite place was either Mammoth Mountain or Sun Valley, ID. Merry was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Flinchbaugh and is survived by her daughter, Merrilie Brehmer of Brunswick, ME, a son, Dr Cortlandt Flinchbaugh of Santa Barbara, a step-daughter Christine Johnson of Coto de Casa. She is survived by grandchildren Robert Brehmer and family of Jacksonville, FL, Jeffrey Brehmer and family of Lancaster, CA, Teri Cassidy and family of Brunswick, ME, Lucy Flinchbaugh of Santa Barbara, and Thomas Flinchbaugh of Santa Barbara. Also, Angie Edginton and family of Reddington, CA, Brandon Johnson and family of Newberry Park, CA, Brooke Johnson and family of Coto de Casa, Jeremy Johnson and family of Utah, Cort Johnson and family of Richland WA, Lacey Zabriskie and family of Orem UT, and Logan Johnson and family of Trabuco Cyn, CA, and Cody Johnson of Coto de Casa. Merry is also survived by 37 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
A celebration of Merry's life will be held on April 20, 2013 at Royal Oaks Manor, in the Creative Arts Center from 2-4PM. In lieu of flowers, Merry's request was for donations to be made in her name to The Huntington Botanical Gardens, 1151 Oxford Rd, San Marino, and CA.91108. Merry's sense of humor and zest for life will be missed by all whose lives she touched. Rest in peace, Merry.
